General No power and antipollution problems

Hi all
We have a JTD diesel with major probs at moment, firstly the car is as flat as a pancake on initial start and wont go higher than 3000 revs, car pulls back, then if you are going down hill all of a sudden car will kick in and runs fine, then there comes a bad smell through the vents then antipollution/engine management light comes on.

If the car won't go faster than 3000 revsm if you stop car give it a min, the start it and boot accelerator it will rev all way around the clock to 5000, then car runs fine but still with this bad smell of fumes!!

We think we have cleaned EGR (and think/hope) this is connected to big black hose that runs to front of engine/radiator???? As it was filled with gunk and once cleaned out it took it for a run and boots great, but then next morning flat as pancake no power at all?????????

Also if you stop car you can here like a pumping noise coming from under the car, when you look the pumping then gets faster and then a pile of smoke pours from the little mini exhaust ??????

Any ideas would be appreciated.

If the fumes you mention smell of kerosene (like a jet engine exhaust) then I would suspect a leaking injector. To determine the cause of your problems you really need to get a readout from your car's diagnostic socket.

By 'small exhaust' I assume your car has an additional heater which runs for a short time after the car is switched off. I don't think this is unusual and is unlikely to be related to your engine/power problem.

Yeah forget the smoke and noise, the auxiliary heaters are all kicking in this time of year now.

The first and easiest thing to check is the Air flow meter on the air box, illuminate this first before doing much else, as for your smell coming through the air vents, simply check the pollen filter housing is firmly bolted up at the back by the four spring hooks and the 2 screws at the front.

Hi, thanks will do yes small exhaust undercar does make a bussing noise for about 3 minutes after car switched off, and will check pollen filter.

Any ideas about no power? thanks
