Hi All,

Did a search but didn't find much.

Just curious, does anyone know of anybody that has fitted a nitrous oxide kit into their GP on standard engine components?

I saw a guy from serbia on here who had it but the replies to he/she wern't great, doubt we will here from he/she again

Also, can anyone comment on the legality of installing it into the car?

I think it is only illegal to inject it on a public road.

As for insurance, I doubt anyone would cover but just curious.

Appreciate any replies

Sam

I believe it's very illegal :)

Police would probably pull you if they saw the tanks regardless of whether they were plugged in or not

and to be honest ... it's not cool unless your trying to break the land speed record or something ... sorry but that's just my opinion, don't you think its a bit too much need for speed or fast and furious?

Plus, I bet those cans ain't cheap :)

According to this:

http://www.akamoto.co.uk/resource-faq.htm
http://www.solware.co.uk/nitrous-oxide-kits/nitrous-oxide-faqs.shtml

It isn't illegal.

That may be wrong though.

Car laws for the UK always confuse me.

I dont think they're too expensive.

Not sure i'd do it just always been curious about it :)

INFACT: having a look around it is LEGAL if covered by your insurance company (which is obviously difficult at a young age)

Hmmm, it's just something a bit different to what most people do (probably because it is fast and furious style).

Looking at your links I spotted this :)

"Akamoto provide these kits to our customers for the use of off road events and shows that are hosted on private land"

Off-road and Private land being the key points :)

"As with all modifications to increase power, the use of nitrous oxide carries with it concerns about the reliability and longevity of an engine. Due to the greatly increased cylinder pressures, the engine as a whole is placed under greater stress, especially the parts involved with the combustion chamber. An engine with components not able to cope with the increased stress imposed by the use of nitrous systems can experience major engine damage, such as cracked or destroyed pistons, connecting rods, or crankshafts"

Good luck is all I can say

I wouldn't bother, if you have that sort of money for a basic kit to be plumbed in and insured you may as well spend the money on upgrading the turbo/exhaust system and having the ecu adjusted to suit.

i doubt its worth all that money for a 10 second speed boost? bet it also costs enough to get your tanks refilled!
but im not guna lie, i know it might be abit flashy... but some small NOS canisters on a boot build would look the mutts nuts! hooked up or not they would look badboy!

It is legal but you find the police don't know the laws on the stuff and assume it's illegal. I've got a polished 11lb bottle with nitrous oxide which looks good. Tanks cost £40 to £50 to refill but gives around 6 to 7 mins worth I think approximately. Also if your engine is below 1.4 don't bother and an engine 1.4 to 1.6 I think can only be reliable with a 25bhp boost from nitrous oxide so any boost bigger than that will effect the engine's reliability.

By the sounds of it then, legal or not, unless you put it in a second car that you really don't care if it destroys it or not Its probably not worth it :p

Was thinking as well, theres no excuses for insurance. With tints etc, you can say "oh its for security/privacy". With NOS, there is only one reason for it, to go faster so they would prob just laugh and put the phone down.

@Aaron87: Is this a working setup then I presume. If so, are you insured with it and what's it like to use?

Pretty sure it's perfectly legal, but either way it doesn't matter, nobody will be able to tell you're using it, this isn't fast and furious where blue flames come out of the exhaust.

However there's no real need to use it on public roads anyway, and it's not worth doing to a punto, unless you rebuild the entire block with stronger components, which would also be silly lol

Yeah i wasn't too serious about doing it. If someone came back and said "hey, i have nos in my punto and i only did it for £200 without any upgraded engine components and it's amazing", it was more curiosity than anything.

Thanks for the replies :)

I'm afraid you'll be looking at 1.1k+ for a 50BHP boost which is truly valuefor money if you think of other mods, to give you some perspective...

All this mods will work best with a remap (Aprox £300)

Decent Induction Kit 5-10 BHP £200 + remap = £500

Full Exhaust Stainless 10-20 BHP £600 + remap = £900

Where a Nitro kit fitted 35-60BHP £800 + remap = £1100

If your serious about it you could chip in some reinforced pistons, seals... the works and with nitro you could easily see the 200bhp from a 1.4 forabout £2k

I am certain nitro systems are not illegal to have but illegal to use ispublic roads. Nitro is perfectly safe to use on any engine (cooling properties)but it does as mention before put a considerable amount of strain on the enginecomponents depending on the boost If you use it often you could see your clutchgo before your engine (massive torque increase).

As for insurance I am not sure if you need to state you have it on or not asyou could easily take the bottle out and fitted on events? Perhaps askingspecialist insurance like Adrian Flux could give you a better idea.

I personally would not risk having one on my day to day car.

I'm fairly sure it's legal on the road. As far as the law is concerned what difference should it make if you get an extra 50bhp from a turbo, nitros, a bigger engine or even a hybrid electric motor. The kit my need to meet some safety standards or have an e mark or something though.

Its totally pointless fitting it to your gp, it will cost a fortune and make your car hard to insure and you won't see a penny back when you sell. Just buy a faster car if you want more speed.
