hi all new to the site just bought my first uno turbo ie it's a 1987 e reg mk1

i got the car as a non runner the guy that had it before me changed the clutch and it never went after that i had it running for a short time, it ran on all four cylinders then wouldn't start any more. i broke the wire going on to the starter, but put another connector on it, I think was the starter switch for when u turn the key .

anyway this is what it is doing now, u turn the key to the on position the fuel pump dos not prime until u turn the key to start. sometimes it will start but not run good as it did then cut of. the spark plugs get soaked with petrol very quickly and the electric windows don't work as well any help would be great guys would like to see this car back on the road i post some pics when i get my camera charged up

please can someone help me as i have run out of ways to get it going.

If the spark plugs are getting soaked then it's almost certainly an ignition problem. Check the wires going to the coil, the ECU and all other ignition components. Also check the ignition switch itself as this can sometimes fail.

As for the electric windows, these often run very slow on the older Unos. If they don't work at all then it's either the switches, the motors or if you're lucky, the fuse. For a mk1 I'm fairly sure the window fuses are connected to the side of the fuse box along with the relay.

Hopefully one of the turbo boys will be along shortly and can give you some more suggestions :)

Good luck and welcome to the forum!

hi all thanks for quick replay peoples i live in scotland in the uk

i really want to keep this car alive and on the road so any help would be great

i just dont understand how i got it to run fine and will not run at all now ????????????????????????????

The fuel pump not priming until the engine is cranking over - I have seen that, never solved that riddle :) It was on Jai's Uno Turbo and it didn't stop the engine from running (just made it a bit slower to start), so I suggest ignoring that for now (it might be the fuel system control relay beside the battery).

Ditto the electric windows, very intermittent on older Mk1s - start by cleaning the switches (remove switch from faceplate, then spread the sides of the switch to remove the rocker part, polish contacts with metal polish or toothpaste) - but all this won't make the engine run unless you have a strange yin-yang effect going on... When I turn on my ignition and operate the windows, the fuel pump primes. I can't explain that link...

A common ignition problem for the Mk1 Turbo (if there IS a common problem - they tend to be a lot more reliable than other '87 Unos) is the flywheel sensor that serves to time the ignition. If your ignition is erratic, the flywheel sensor may be the cause. The connector lies somewhere under the coolant expansion tank, around the area of the clutch cable/release arm and thus likely to get chafed or drenched in water during coolant top-ups or overflows.

Check the distributor cap and rotor - rarely a problem, but still there, so still a potential cause of spark loss.

Make sure the connectors to the ignition coil are tight. They're just normal push-on spade connectors on the Mk1.

Best of luck and welcome to the forum

hi floks still not been able to get my uno running proplerly yet . the story so far .

it will run but not good this is how i got it to run a take the (witch) i think is the starter motor switch wire its the red small wire and touch the the big red cable coming from the battery .

when i turn the key on the fuel pump will not prime but when u take the small wire of and turn the key as you were trying to start the car then u can hear the pump buzzing need help i have tryed everything to get this car going now

how many wires should be on the stater motor :bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang:

could it be anything to do with the crank shaft sensor ...

Maybe the solenoid in the starter has gone?

Have you tried a different starter to see if that sorts it?or can you not get one easily/cheaply?

Dan

the starter is fine the car turns over if u read the first post will give u idear wats happening with the car just want to get out on the road lol

had a look at it the day seems that the fuel pump relay is no working with the key on its a new relay thats on i played about with the old one took it out is box and got some one to turn the engine over and press the flappy bit on the relay and it went but not good . thanks for the suggestions peoples

It really sounds like the fuel pump relay is faulty - which is not unknown, it's actually quite a complicated little circuit. A Bosch relay off any car that has LH-Jetronic fuel injection should work - the unique pin configuration pretty much ensures that you don't fit the wrong (e.g. a standard) relay.

Re: mk1 ut in need of some help plz!!!!!!!!

hi all thought would have another bash at the mk1 done some reading up on the electricaly system .

So story so far car will start and run aslong as u have the key turn to start it soon as u let the key go cuts off ? fuel pump still not primimg bfor u try start it i crossed over the 30 and 87b on the fuel control relay and it run bit not good at at fuel pump was on all the time any idears now wat it could be realy want this car to go back on the road thank for all ur earlyer help

jjkee - Sorry for saying this but is there any chance you can break up your sentences with punctuation please just try reading what you wrote aloud to yourself and you will see that if you have really long sentences and just keep typing that it makes it really hard to read and because people cant undersatnd what you are trying to say they are less likely to help you out to get your car back on the road and a fuel pump relay and my fuel pump broke last week and I got stuck in Bristol and had to book half a day off work so that I could go to Bristol and get my car back and then drive it back down the motorway and blah blah blah.

See what I mean? ;)

hi thanks for the replys i have changed the fuel pump relay for a new one still the same problem could it be some thing to do with the other wire's going into the relay that could be the problem . there is power getting to the pump but just when your starting it and the key is in the start position thanks for all ur help

hi thanks for the replys i have changed the fuel pump relay for a new one still the same problem.

If you read what you wrote again I think you have found your problem.

The power is not getting to the fuel relay when the ignition switch is in the on position.

My logic tells me it is a problem with either the switch or the wiring from the switch to the relay.

I once had a problem like this in an old 72 Rover that had a ballast resistor wire that had failed. The car would fire up when you tried to start, when you released the key to the run position it would stop. As soon as I put a wire to the coil to bypass the ballast resistor it ran fine.

You appear to have a similar problem but it is with the power going to the fuel relay.

I hope this makes sense.
