New road tax rates double for some cars

New road tax rates double for some cars

Wait a second. cars over 226 registered before 2006 are added to band K not F. Is there an official source saying this yet?

That's what I was thinking too.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524

The site the OP posted says that

The cars that will experience the biggest jump in VED are those emitting over 226g CO2 per km, registered after 1st March 2001 but before 23rd March 2006. These cars, which move from the current band F to the new bands L or M, will see their VED jump from £210 to a minimum of £415 from next year - a significant amount relative to their likely value.

Thing is that these cars are NOT in band F at the moment anyway. They're £260 to tax now, not £210!!!!!

A quick search on an internet site shows that this story was from 2008 originally and is therefore complete borlocks

I hope it is out of date, but it looked like a new press article, it appears today as latest news if you look as wise buyers web-site. I was thinking I would have to sell our V8 jeep towcar, I have a Stilo Jtd wagon its OK as its 149 co2 = £130 p/year, I think my Jeeps about 350 co2 if run on petrol, but its LPG anyway, but still only get £20 off the tax even though its very environmentally friendly on gas.

How do u know its an old, out of date article ? I searched the internet and could not any other announcement and nothing on the DLVA website, however that never gives future V.E.D. costs well in advance - Thx David

Looking on the DVLA the last increase they mention is 2008 from what I can tell.

and on the tax price page its showing tax bands from April 2011 still.

OK Thx, never knew you could find out when an article was written, I just done understand why it shows up on wise buyers under "on the inside" this section should be giving new news, not outdated rubbish !

At least I am safe for a bit longer paying road tax of £230p/a for a V8 Jeep, I am only doing about 2500 miles per year in it, so it still seems a lot

You guys have it easy. Check out our miserable setup :mad::mad:

Some cars around the house:

Bravo 1.2: €333 a year
Tempra 1.6: €478 a year
BMW 525i: €1005 a year :bang:
Mercedes 280SE: €1294 a year

It doesn't stop there either, tax is capped at 3 litres, €1683 a year.

CO² bands are just as unfair and confusing

Picture paying tax on your cars at our rates and compare the differences :(

Haha. just think the richest need to start paying their way?
So paying tax at 40% and potentially 50% isn't enough for you?

Hey, why not bring back surtax/supertax - giving an effective rate of 136.25% on certain earnings - and that was only around c40 years ago.

To be rich or to get rich implies you have investments and/or a large annual income. Do you really believe the 'rich' don't pay their way? Granted, there are certain tax breaks, but I would like to see their self-assessed Income Tax & Class 1 or 4 NIC compared to yours, then let's see who is contributing.

Maybe you should move to a Communist country - sorted :)

Edit - this is no way condoning bankers' bonuses and such like who are a different breed - but I would like you to define 'richest' ...

I'd be paying $626 (EUROS!! No euro sign :( )

Its a weird set up.. I'd be paying less because its a 2004 car than if it went of CO2 which would be $677..

Its an unfair system, look at the jump if over 2000ccs... Nearly 200 quid! :bang:

Some of the nicest cars out there are just too costly to run for the everyday individual. Hence why I drive small 1.2s (which are still more expensive than most of the UKs system)

Due to the hike in petrol I'll be forced to go diesel at the end of the year. Bye bye van, hello €660 a year tax

Oooh and then theres the loopholes. Commercial tax is dirt cheap (€310 a year) and easyish to get. A common practice here is to get the likes of a Nissan 300ZX or Mitsubishi 3000GT and commercialise them... Audi RS4 van anyone? It's been done
