ok i've worked it out, im gonna take the power from the screen washer switch on the dash as an ignition switch so its on when the key is in.
all i have to work out now is how to stop it getting nicked!

yep already got that wire from the last tape player i had. so should be all sorted tomorrow, just gotta buy me a iso to wires connectyor thingy..
cheers!

I've had an aftermarket stereo in my car for nearly a year and it doesn't have a switched ignition wire.

The switched ignition wire just turns the stereo on and off with the ignition, it doesnt actually draw any power through that wire AFAIK

You should be fine as long as you turn the stereo off when you get out of the car

Same here. Mine can be turned on and off whenever and only uses a trickle of power to keep hold of the time and stations (though I found out a few weeks ago that if it loses the time if you disconnect the battery, once it's listened to the radio it finds the time again! :D) and the battery suffers not a drop.

Some do, some don't (as I found out the hard way) and draw a fair bit of current:eek: If the instructions tell you it draws too much current I would trust them, they know thier own product(y)

That makes no sense though, all the headunit does when its turned off is uses some power to keep the settings (Bugger all power - maybe drain the battery in a year?). If its turned off then the internal amps etc aren't running.

I should add that i'm using a newish alpine and i don't actually turn it off, i just unclip the facia as its quicker than holding the power off button!

well i managed to wire it all up correctly, got a wire from the switches and ran it down to the stereo. also put some new bulbs in the dash at the same time so that was good.
all running fine, except one speaker keeps shorting (crap wire) so its running on 3. the sound it pretty amazing, its 50w per speaker and runs 4 speakers, and the speakers in the back are 100w, and the front ones are standard panda ones, in the pods. all sounds great.
cheers for the help!
huw

The manufacturer wants you to believe they're getting 50W each......but they're not. Your headunit quotes maximum power output, constant power output will be about 10W to each speaker if that. But if its sounds fine to you then thats all the matters. Also, 50W isn't 5 times louder than 10W. Its a dodgy scale, to get twice as loud as 10W you need about 100W and to double 100W you need about 1000W etc etc
