iv read my haynes manuel lots , and searched loads.
but im still confused.

where are the wires ?

manuel says, there is some in a little box next to the steering colmn, cant find.
theres a areal wire plesent, and 2 speaker wires from the back speakers,
(previous owner fitted them, but didnt get round to fitting the head unit.
it says i am looking for ''power red/green and earth''

is it possible for me to use the ciggarette lighter power ??
-----------------------
next ! how do i work out where to put the power wires into my headunit,
when it has to plugs. one with 4 points and one with 8 points.

theres also aux port and cd changer ports ect.. to ingnore.

PLEEAASE! help.
thanks v v v much : )

The power for my cigarette lighter came off the loom for the stereo. I'd be suprised if yours wasn't the same.

The panda has non-standard power and ground wires, think they're little rectangular plugs (Or maybe just one plug). Power is red and ground black.

To get the power into the headunit you'll probably need an ISO converter for your headunit and then you'll need an ISO to panda convertor. Autoleads sell the panda converter, can't remember the model number off the top of my head.

Might help if you post a photo of the back of your headunit

ok heres the front and the back.

thanks for your help.
so i CAN use the lighter power, ye ?
thats good !

do i HAVE to buy convertors, or is there any way i can work out which wire/wires to put the power to ?

ALSO: the brown and black plugs are the same but the brown is full and the black only has 4 pins in it.

and ther is the blue striped wire and the orange wire going off the right of the pic, they both have cut ends.

:)

thanks VVVVV much !

You should have a plug behind the facia for the stereo, couple of plugs for ground and live. I think they're on the same wire as the cigarette lighter (Power from fuse box goes into stereo plug, then out of stereo plug into cigarette lighter) so trace that wire back a bit and see if you find the connectors.

If you find the standard plugs then that is a standard connector on the headunit, you'll need an autoleads PC2-07-4 adapter to convert the panda power and ground wires to the plug on the stereo. Then you'll need to get some female spade connectors to plug the speaker wire into the black or brown plug on the back of the headunit. These vary in size, measure the width of the pins in the black/brown socket to work out which ones you need. They're available from maplin etc. You'll need some for the speaker end of the cable too.

BUT, most importantly you'll need the headunit manual to work out what all the pins on the black and brown sockets do.

If you need any help, just PM me

The two connectors on the back of your head unit are standard ISO connectors. The brown one is for the speakers (2x front and 2x rear) and the black one is for the various power leads.

Standard ISO wiring diagram here.

The diagram shows just one connector. Don't worry about that, all the colours are correct.

If your car doesn't have the original FIAT stereo connector then you'll need an ISO plug with bare wires to connect into the loom. You'll be able to get one of these in most car accessory shops.

ok so the brown one is for speakers. GOOD GOOD !
i will leave that for now.cos its easy.

on closer inspection. the BLACK plug
has 4 pins in it.
but only 3 pins have wires coming off them!
i have...

Black with little brown stripes.
Blue with little brown stripes.
Red with little black stripes on (this has a wierd shape 15A fuse)

ok so can i put 2 of those wires onto the back of my cig lighter ??
that would rock !
which 2 ?? red and blue ?? what do i do with black ?

thanks v much guys, your panda knowledge is brilliant.

OK, red will be 12V positive. Black will be earth. Blue is normally a 12V output for electric aerial/amp etc. But seeing as this is not standard I might be wrong about the blue. If you connect the red to 12V+ and the black to earth the radio should turn on. You can then check the blue wire by connecting it to the positive pin on a 12V bulb and then touching the bulb body to an earth point (such as the radio casing). If the bulb illuminates then the blue is a 12V output. If not then it may be for facia illumination or internal memory, in which case it needs to be spliced into the wiring for the lights or connected to a permanent 12V supply (so that when the ignition is off the memory still has power).

I think blue is normally a trigger output. Can be used to send a signal to an external amplifer (Turns the amp on and off with the headunit to avoid battery drain)

WOO sounds liek we are there!

red is 12+ (goes onto back of cig lighter)
black in earth (erm can i just wire this to a piece of metal, thats part of the cassis in effect ?)
and i will test the blue, and then if its ok, leave it.

thanks

so ye, wheres best to earth the black, and does it matter which of the 2 cig lighter contacts the red goes onto.

cheers people. v happy.

The earth can be connected to any suitable point on the body as long as the wire is in good contact with bare metal. An existing bolt or screw through the body would be ok to loosen, wrap the wire around and tighten again. This should only be temporary though. You should fit a proper ring or two prong connector to the earth wire if you intend to secure it like this.

On the cigarette lighter there should be a thick (not sure what colour but probably red) wire going to the element on the back of the lighter. This is the 12V positive supply to the lighter. I think it is also earthed separately with a thick black wire. This is because the cigarette lighter draws a lot of current to heat the element up quickly and needs thicker gauge wiring to handle the current. You could connect your earth here too.

Edit - there will also be a thinner gauge wire on the cigarette lighter for the integral light. Don't use this for the radio 12V+.

I think you're meant to connect the radio up before it gets to the ciggy lighter, not after as this can cause interference?. You can get splice crimps from maplin to do this.

I'm 99% sure the blue wire is a trigger wire, you don't need it wired to anything for the radio to work. Putting a bulb on it might not prove anything because if it is a trigger then it will be VERY low powered so may not have enough power to illuminate the bulb.

Just try with red and black wires and if all is ok then leave it as that.

Do the red and yellow wires go to the same pin on the ISO block? If so thats fine, otherwise you'll need to wire the yellow one upto the red wire on the car too. Red is permenant live and yellow is switched. Red is used to store setting and yellow is used to turn the radio off with the ignition but there isn't a yellow wire in that area of the panda (There is but thats for ciggy lighter illumination and goes on and off with the lights so this isn't suitable for the radio yellow).

So, red and yellow from the radio onto red in the car
Blue left unatached
Black to the car body/ground on ciggy lighter

Think thats all you need

EDIT: something else, depending on the age of the radio you may need an aerial adapter. Plenty on ebay, you need the less common type. Lead DIN to ISO? Its a cable with connectors on the ends rather than one solid converter.

thanks VERY MUCH for the help people !

iv just got in 10.30
and iv managed to wire and finish fitting the whole jobbie !
iv got a pair of pioneer box speakers in the dash pocket.one either side.
and a pair of round pioneers in the rear panels.
sounds great !

its funny having a modern flashy digital faced headunit next to a choke !!

just gotta buy a wire for aux in,
and make a mount sumwhere for my mp4 player.
(possibly using the ball joint off a rear view mirror?)
i will get pics when its all done.

:) !!

thanks again !!

woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Aran.

yes, nice one aran, cant wait to see it working. probably better than my tape player, it keeps slowing down when its cold. hhmmmm. :)

Wow, look at that volume slider!

I've got a new alpine in mine (9847R) and some cliff designs speakers (speakers cost about £250 in the late 90s). Just bought an old alpine amp which i plan on mounting under the dash pocket as theres a horizontal piece of steel under there.

Will let you know how it all goes!

a quick question regarding fitting stereo in a panda,
just got myself a new one, and it says in the manual when wiring up i MUST wire it up to the 'ignition key' otherwise it will drain power.
i've never wired a stereo up to the ignition before, so is it neccesery>?
i dont have a clue where the ignition key wire is anyway...
can anyone help?

Yes it is, I made this mistake on Twinky and it would flatten the battery within 2 days:(

I've fitted my own temp cut off switch until I have time to take the dash apart again to hunt for the right wiring.
