Just bought an 02 plate JTD diesel multipla. 73k and got a bargin price but after driving it am slightly concerned about the brakes!
If driving along and braking the pedal goes flat to floor with no effect on speed but if i pump the brake slowly it works better. This isnt normal is it?
Have booked it in for a service next week anyway but wondered if i should get brakes checked urgently or not???

Also there is a rattle when first starting and a squeaking which disappears when you raise the RPM. any ideas?
Have i bought a dog of a car????? :0(

Forget about the rattle, the squeak and the service for now and get those brakes checked out...

Did they not sink to the floor on the test drive??

have you looked at inside edges of all four wheels for leaking brake fluid? (use a torch & look after car standing & having pumped brakes a few times). also look under bonnet at brake fluid reservoire, is it topped between lower & higher marks?, any leaking there?, is cap on ok?. if level is ok & no obvious leaking it sounds like brakes need bleeding, maybe previous owner did some work on brakes & never blead them (surprising how many people dont know how to). if you go down the bleeding fluid route, buy a one man kit that you attach airline to spare wheel to bleed, they are amazing, make a tricky job very simple to do.
not sure if there is a sequence to bleed on multi, so i would do rear first then front furthest away from reservoir leaving one next to reservoir to last. hope this helps

thanks for the replys.

brakes were fine on test drive but car had to then sit for 5 days as the indicator switch needed replacing and part had to be obtained.

We took car to garage and it was an air bubble in pipes. All seemed ok with everything else but we have booked it in for full service on Thursday to get all checked and have decided to get cam belt changed anyway to start as we mean to go on.

Even after brakes were bled and garage had given it all clear we notice that actually they still need pumping a little and the car prefers to slow down through the gears rather than full on slamming brakes on.....is this the ABS?

Previsouly had an 8 seater ulysses but the more i drive the multipla the more i enjoy it and the kids love it for sure!

thanks for the replies. Well we did a full halfords service which highlighted WAY TOO MANY FAULTS!

We had to have new brake discs and pads front and back, we have fitted new cam belt and gasket head and serpantine belt, we have had new coils fitted at rear and had the tracking done on all four wheels.
We have had to go back to the trader we bought it from who now have to fit new O/S/R bush and new hadnbrake cable and we have to have a full gear box replacement including flywheel........they have agreed to fix these bits under warrenty and we have paid for everything else.

I really hope this multipla is worth it!!!!!!!

Multiplas really are great cars, I hope this hasn't put you off. Unfortunately, dishonest car sales people seem to be the biggest problem. One bit of advice I would give is to find a good reliable local independent garage that wont rip you off. I've always found Halfords to be very expensive, and as they get the parts from their own shop they have no problem finding things to replace!!!!
