500 New member CANCHECK issue

Hi, just hoping that someone can give me some advice. I have a CANCHECK message that appears on the radio display and this normally happens when the car struggles to start. From what I have read so far it appears that this may be a connectivity issue and I need to take it it a Fiat garage. Would this be the same explanation for the car struggling to start? Next question is, is it an expensive issue to fix? Thanks in advance for any help

Did you ever get the Power Steering fault sorted that you posted in 2015 as the CanCheck error could be to do with that ?

You need to get the code read to find out what error the system is seeing as CanCheck checks nearly everything so we don't want to send you down the wrong route.

What area are you in as maybe we have someone local who could read the code for you ?

Hi,
you can get the actual fault code read for little cost

knowing what will be required.. then you can anticipate cost,
IF the vehicle is on it's original battery - then that's likely to be @£100 for a replacement,
but could just be a connection needs sorting, I cleared a bunch of similar errors on a 500 3 months ago, and all fine now

How often does the car struggle to start? When you say struggle does it crank slowly or something else?

It's probably every few days and it just tries to turn over for ages and takes a few goes before it gets started. Hope that makes sense

Hi, does it crank over quickly but not start?(assuming petrol 1.2) or crank slowly? when did it last have any attention, spark plugs filters etc?

It's a diesel 1.3 and has only just had new glow plugs

Ah then somewhat out of my knowledge, but it should still not struggle to start so suggests another non critical issue?

did it have an error message for the plugs..? or did you just get them changed as a service item..??

I'd get the car scanned for errors - before wasting money on MORE parts

so - how many miles , what year.. ??

if it's got a DPF that'll complicate things..

Yeah it had an error msg for glow plugs so got them done and thought it would sort the cancheck msg too but didn't.

It's 2009 plate and I've done 87000 miles but it's been serviced regularly.

Not sure about dpf filter lol. Think I better get it booked into garage

Good idea. Make sure to choose either a franchised dealer, or an independent with specialist knowledge of the marque and the right diagnostic tools. Otherwise they could waste a lot of your money following dead ends.

Trying to diagnose this from a keyboard, or predict the size of the final bill, would likely be as successful as applying makeup whilst blindfolded and hanging upside down in freezing cold water.

But I do hope you get it fixed without too much hassle or expense.
