When i first heard it that the followers is fooked and the work involve, i was like new car time :D. But i decided to kept using the car :)

You need to take the whole engine out, because the cam is inside the block.

Really easier to just get a working engine and put that in.

To check if it is the follower, take the head off, and clean all the hole the push rod go into, and see if there is any pieces of metal there.

Here is some pic

This is what i found in the hole (AKA the left over of the follower)

The tappet with the clip broken should be renewed.

And see the last 5 tappets, the head bit of all sticken out, use a piler and lightly pull see if it comes out.

What i found was that the wee spring inside the tappets is smashed to pieces.

See when u checked if the valve is moving or not was that after you tigten the adjuster nut ?

Tappets is around £13 quid each so is rather piecey. But make sure what u need and price it all together !!!! Then PM me

And the tappet should go in like the following picture

The allowing is point the way it should go in the Rocker gear, remeber it has to go from bottom up.

thanks mate ill be sure to pm you (y) i tried the pushrod with the rocker tightened and slackened. i pulled some of them apart to clean them up and they had a small amount of resistance then came apart, im shocked the car ran at all with all these problems!!!

i got a torch out to have a look down the holes earlier but i couldnt see anything obvious, can the follower get stuck? or is it a case of if it doesnt move its snapped?. im well gutted i just spent a tenner on a thread chaser and sorted the plug hole out as well! :bang:

See i am not really glue up what the cam followers actually do, this is one for rallycinq.

I think is basically there to make sure the push rod sits in place. Do it tomorrow, clean the oil out, and look in it it will be pretty obvious, if it is smashed, it will look like the picture :)..

Or poke a pushrod in it, and listen to any un usual sound.

What mine stood out was that the smash followers, the push rod sit higher then all others.

May be u can try those tomorrow :) or try to put all push rod and see if any of them sit higher :)

quick update, ive got the head off it and i cant see any damage (to anything) the follower seems to be stuck because i got a thin rod and tapped it with a hammer and it pushed it down but when it comes back up it stays up unless i tap it again, any idea how to free it off ?

Flush and change your oil. The follower is only held in by the cam and should fall back with gravity. However the valve spring should push it back down when the rocker gear is attached.

okay ive got some oil so i can do that i think i can see whats wrong, if you look down the pushrod hole there is a metal liner, and on all the other pushrods this liner can be moved freely but on the broken hole its jammed and when the follower moves up it pushes the liner up with it but it wont go back down without a tap

hi all

have been tinkering with the engine all day but couldnt get it to work so have now started to take it out!!!(n) any guidence on this would be most appreiciated.

cheers

Drain the oil, drain the water, front wheels off, bumper off, radiator out, drain the gearbox, shafts out, Electrics disconnected, I presume the head is off so the manifold will be off, lower the whole car till the engine rests onto a pallet, undo the mounting bolts, lift the car off the engine/box assembly. Drag it out from under the car.

Cheers

thanks rallycinq!

who needs a haynes manual with your abridged version lol (y) so far today ive taken the head off, disconnected the electrics, removed the starter motor, alternator and the water pump so now i just start from the top of the list and work down?

Hi
I'm new to the forum today!
I can sympathise. Got a cinq sporting in red - been off road for 18months - battery now dead. Replaced battery but now the thing won't start - no fuel I think. I read in a workshop manual never to let the battery go flat or memory of the 'brain' will die!! Is this true?
IBefore I bought a new battery, I jumped the car from my other and it ran fine but when turned the car off the thing was stone dead within 30 seconds so defo the battery. Took it off 3 weeks ago and just replaced it now the thing just turns over but doesn't even attempt a start and absolutley no smell of juice even if I pump the throttle like mad.
Any ideas?

hi natalie

welcome to the forum!
when you turn the key to the on position, can you hear a faint buzzing sound? if you cant then i think maybe the relay for the fuel pump may be knackered or the fuel pump itself, if you cant hear the buzzing noise (it does it for 1 or 2 seconds) then id start by changing the relay (its in a little black box just above the ECU just lift the cover off) listen carefully for it though its easy to miss! id suggest doing it late at night when its quiet

hope this helps
cheers

oops forgot to add, you could try tipping a small amount of fuel down the throttle body and turning it over, if it starts or tries to you will have some idea of whats the problem!

Thanks for the info guys. Sorry it took so long for me to reply - been away with work.
Fuel pump buzzes - big problem - don't have a red key - what is the red key for anyway?

hi natalie

if you look in the faq or guides section (at the top of the page) there is a detailed description on how the keys work, but the general idea is the red key is the master key for your car and you should have the red key and at least one blue key.if you dont have a red key for it and that turns out to be the problem then a good solution is to purchase a mckritch chip for it which will not only disable the immobiliser,it will bump up the performance of the car a bit too (y) (have a look in the faq's and guides for detailed info on the chip and how to purchase one) from what ive read the price is very reasonable for what it does for the sporting! :D

good luck!

cheers
