General new cinq owner but not a runner

when my car didnt start for ages, i just disconnected the battery terminal for about 5 mins if that and reconnected it and it worked fine, turned over no probs

hi all

quick update i got it running today albeit roughly it seems to be firing on only 2 cylinders but all 4 have a good spark. the way i managed to get it to run was to swap over the wires to the coils it will run with only either one plugged in but it does not improve with both plugged in. the engine has some damage to it

1. the plate for the throttle body where it bolts to the engine has one of the corners broken off and has been bodged with gastite and a few allen key bolts are missing around that part of the engine

2. all the pipes to the spi are loose and there seems to be an air leak somewhere nearby but i cant find it

3. one of the spark plugs was forced in by the "garage" so the thread is ruined but i tightened the new plug in to it as far as i could and it seems ok

the engine will not respond much to the accelerator and chucks out some smoke and petrol fumes and gets extremely hot immediately but the oil cap doesnt seem to have any signs of mayonaisse on it and the oil looks pretty clean

any thoughts would be greatfully received!

cheers
jay

Could be head gasket, but do a compression test before you pull it to bits. A blown HG would explain everything, but isn't the only possible explanation. You'll find "new" throttle body and inlet mani bits at a scrappy. Try a thread chaser -- 12mm x 1.25 through the dodgy plug hole -- they don't cost more than a tenner from Machine Mart, etc.

yeah i was pretty much convinced it was the head gasket ive been out tonight to put some water in as it was pretty low. i started it again and it fired straight up and revved slightly more but its still the same. the tb seems to be making a popping sound if thats of any use, i have a tap and die set that ive never found use for i might see whats in there also ive got some of that kweld stuff that fixed my rover's head gasket and has been in there for over a year now and is still running perfect, do you reckon its worth a try on this?

okay will do ive been out all morning on it and ive been running it without the tb cover on and its popping unburnt fuel back through it also if you take the lead off either plug 1 or 3 it stops popping but still wont rev much and the last thing was as it ran out of fuel the revs seem to pick right up but when i put more fuel in it just went back to how it was so im wondering if its getting too much fuel?

ok ill take a look at it and yeah its an 899 i did notice one of the small allen bolts are missing and some form of vapor comes through it when the engine stops and another one isnt tightened down so im guessing its most likely cross threaded. im wondering if it may be a good idea to either strip the tb down or just replace it? would it be worth me making a video of it running? and pictures?

edit: ive just been and picked up some new ht leads for it and stuck em on and its getting better now, i had a quick look at the tb assembly too and it seems okay but where it mounts to the head (on the rocker cover i think) that is what the corner is missing from and when i took the tb off there is some of that gastite stuff in the bore that the tb bolts on to, i found that only one side of the tb mount has those allen key bolts in and that is whats leaking (if you cover the hole it creates a vacuum but i couldnt keep the engine running and try covering both holes up at the same time. where the corner is broken off there is a small puddle of petrol there after you run the car

okay i will have to have a ring round the local scrappys i was looking at the broken off corner and it looks like it belongs to the rocker cover is that right? could you please tell me what you would consider replacing at the same time?

so far ive changed the plugs and the ht leads but if im going to the scrappy i may as well get everything at once

Hmm ...

I am pretty sure, one of your tappets has became lose, sound exactly like mind ... or a valve issue. I never ever forget that sound !! it happened to me about 6 times .....

IS there white smoke poping out the tb ???

I got most of the bits u need even got a head if your head gasket is gone and all the thread for the spark plug hole is perfect.

hi ming

the vapour that it spits out looks translucent but how difficult is it to sort the tappets on it if it turns out to be that? im gonna try get a few of those allen bolts for the head because there is a definate air leak and im hoping that they will sort the misfire to some degree. i will get back to you about the parts for it.

btw just wondered what you and every one else thinks of the car? im still convinced it was worth the 100 quid i paid for it

Yup yup, did it come with tax ??

The tappets is not hard just annoying ... when i done it, it kept happening in the sapce of 3 months time, but that is not to say it will happen to you.

My experienece is that, the tappets flew out from the top, and the lock ring got smashed to pieces (it will be obvious once u took the rocker cover off).

So you will need a new lock ring (50 pence from Fiat) and a new tappet. Also what happened to mine was that the groove where the lock ring in the rocker cover was also damage, so i needed a new one of those ..

I would do as finger suggested, take the rocker cover off and if there is anything wrong with the tappets it will be obvious.

hi mate

yeah its taxed till july and motd till september so quite a bit left on it yet

i will ask rallycinq about it and hopefully itll be sorted soon, i may take the rocker off today and have a look, ill update later with my findings

hi all

nothing much to add today ive taken the tb off completely and found a nice lump of gastite down the bore so ive removed that completely cleaned it all up and put it back together, the first time i forgot to put that spacer plate in and it started revving itself up so i took it to bits again and put it back on and now it sounds okay at tickover but not much better at revs its still popping however i unplugged the ecu for 5 mins then plugged it back in and it stopped popping briefly and now the injector light stays on whilst its running so i wonder if its the ecu thats at fault as well? :bang::bang::bang: btw i thought id take it for a little spin around the industrial esate and well errmm lets just say it was interesting lol i got 25 ish in 4th wooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

also i noticed theres an oily well that looks like a bolt hole (its right next to the dipstick)

I've listened to the video, and it could be tappets, but lets go back to basics.

You need to source another rocker cover and fit that. The 899 inlet manifold is the rocker cover so any leak there is a problem, particularly at that point on the cover.

While you have the rocker cover off, give each rocker a waggle. They should all be reasonably tight. Also have a wee look at the makeup of the rocker. There could be an locking nut and screw adjuster at the pushrod end. If there is, this could be a good thing.

Then you need to check how the plugs are connected. Number one plug, at the drivers end of the engine should be attached to the same coil as number 4. Therefore numbers 2 and 3 plugs should be attached to the other coil.

Report back for the next stage.

Cheers
