General new cinq owner but not a runner

hi mate

right i will try find a cinq with 899cc motor and i might get the tb whilst im at it , i have replaced the plug leads and they are now in the correct order and all cylinders have a new spark plug with a healthy spark, are there any other fiat models that use the 899 engine?

You can get the TB from cinq and sei 899, 1108 and punto 60.

They will all fit one with only 1 different, the bracket for the accelator cable is different, but that can just be swapped over and is only held by 2 bolts.

second difference, u just need to use your orginial 899 spacers (the spacer that is between the rocker cover and tb)

This way u won't limit yourself to where u find the tb.

Just taken the rocker cover off found that 2 of the tappets had fallen out of their housings have put them back now, also waggled the rockers and all are very loose except the 4th and 7th (from left to right) which cannot be moved by hand. Do I need to tighten the lock nuts up?

Cheers

Jay

Remeber in each of those hole (or rocker gear)

There should be tappet, lock ring and a shim ( a small metal plate)

Make sure you found alkl those bits, as you don't want any of them falling down th engine.

Picture would be helpful!!

Thanks
Ming

Thats all there (I think only tappets had fallen out), have also tightened rockers so the only move slightly by hand. Do you sugest anything else or shall I put it back togeter and try start it again?

Cheers
Jay

didnt work anyway (found out about adding up to 9) i think i may have stumbled on the problem, the 2nd valve on the 3rd cylinder doesnt move and neither does the pushrod  ive taken the rocker, tappets and the pushrods out and cleaned them all and took photos so ill post them all in a few minutes

heres the photos i took earlier after i cleaned everything up, the valve/pushrod with the problem is the one without a locknut or adjuster (3rd from the right)

my son wanted to be in a picture so i thought id add it as well ;)

I don't see no shims on the top of those tappets.

Take the plugs out, and with the correct pushrod, put it back into the follower, and turn the engine over by hand. If it really isn't moving then its pretty fubared.

I know someone who managed to break a follower.

hi mate

i found 2 of the tappets down by the pushrods and im not sure which way they go in, ive turned the engine several times and the valve opened once IIRC. the oil supply to the tappets seems to be okay but most of them were stuck shut so i cleaned them up and freed them off. i take it im going to need a full set of tappets, shims etc? :(

thanks for clearing that one up mate (y) when i took the rocker cover off and looked at them they were different ways up so i didnt know which way they were supposed to go. is there any chance you know of a photo to show me what the shims look like?. If the follower is knackered, is it worth repairing the engine or should i look for a new 899?

cheers

 could i possibly get away with just a new head for it?. the other thing i was hoping to ask was can you just take the rocker cover off and unbolt the head all in 1 piece?

All in 1 piece as in keeping the rocker gear ? I don't think so, as the rocker gear is in the way of head bolts ...

I was the one with a broken followers, ever since then my engine keep breaking every 2 , 3 weeks :(

I'll try get u some pics tomorrow ..

The tappet with the clip broken should be renewed.

And see the last 5 tappets, the head bit of all sticken out, use a piler and lightly pull see if it comes out.

What i found was that the wee spring inside the tappets is smashed to pieces.

See when u checked if the valve is moving or not was that after you tigten the adjuster nut ?

Tappets is around £13 quid each so is rather piecey. But make sure what u need and price it all together !!!! Then PM me

And the tappet should go in like the following picture

The allowing is point the way it should go in the Rocker gear, remeber it has to go from bottom up.

hi ming

ah i didnt notice there are bolts under the rocker gear i was hoping to just unbolt then bolt a new one in place of it. how difficult a job is it if the follower is knacked?

cheers
