Mrs Numptey has said if I'm a good boy I can get a new car when the extension is finished. But by the time I've paid for it I'll be too old to drive more that 30mph. So I am looking at getting something cheap (less than £1000) that will be fun to drive and not too expensive to insure/repair etc. I have a Punto semi auto that is great for going to work as it's mostly in traffic but it lacks the extra wahoo factor. I'm partial to Rovers (not yet worked out why) and have been offered a 220 GTI (only 34 left with m series engine) for £695 on one of the forums that's in very good nick but this doesn't go round corners as good as the Fiat Coupe by what I have read. Daihatsu make a YRV turbo semi auto that's interesting but a bit bland to look at unlike the Coupe or the 220 GTI. What do you suggest that not run of the mill?

mr2 turbo? sure you can get one of them for around £1k

or... s13 200sx (if you can find an unmolested one)

bmw e36 328

erm... struggling now.

old shape mondeo st24..

some random fast volvo, can you get a t5r for under a grand these days?

older subaru impreza might be doable but prob not a particularly nice one

alfa of some description, prob a few you can get for around £1k, v6 156 maybe

You're not driving it right, then.... :p

Cheeky Monkey ;)

I've tried several styles of driving it and it's much better that I first thought (now I've fixed the issues) Homey. The Punto really is a good little car and pretty quick for a small auto. But still.......

Just checking, since you mentioned 2 semi's in your OP ;) I've always fancied that YRV Turbo tbh, not the most attractive car but good performance and bullet proof engine AFAIK. Have a look at carandclassic for anything under £1k, can take a bit of trawling but you might come across something interesting :)

Some good suggestions in here Blu I hadn't thought of. Had looked at the Volvo t5 it has speed luxury and transport space for anything I want to carry but the wife thinks estates look like hearses and won't get in it, oh hold on lol
Impreza is ugly but does tick a lot of boxes. The 200sx is that the nissan?
Just checked out the MR2 good call the older ones look better than the new ones, hadn't considered one of those

aye the mr2 is meant to be an awesome car, although i never been in one myself - i know several people that have or have owned one and they all rave about them..

and yes s13 200sx is a nissan - most have been ragged and/or turned into drift cars but they are nice cars if you find a decent one, and in my opinion, can be beautiful to. ukdm ones are 1.8 turbo, rwd. The newer ones had a better 2.0 turbo.

i love the s13, alot - here is a few pics to try convince you ;)

i must admit, when i first read it first thing i thought was you could buy a cinq/sei and drop 16v or tuned 1.2 8v mpi in it for a grand. But from what the OP has written i think he wants something a bit more.... 'sporty'. But both a panda or cento could be made loads of fun for around a grand for sure (y)

Classic joke time!!!

An Essex girl was involved in a nasty car crash and was trapped bleeding in the wreckages. The paramedics soon arrives on the scene.
“It’s OK” said the ambulance man, “I’m a paramedic and I’m going to ask you some questions”
“OK” said the girl.” What’s your name”
“Sharon”
“OK, Sharon is this your car?”
“Yes”
“Where are you bleeding from?”
“Bleeding Romford, where are you bleeding from?”

Neither of those are bad ideas but I would have to buy one already done as the only place I could drop an engine would be on my foot

YRV turbo does look a bit old mans car but that would be part of the attraction as I leave them at the lights ;)

But the MR2 is growing on me, maybe hard to get an unmolested sample of the 200

tbf, a grand should buy you a done fast cento - i couldn't comment on the panda, not that different but i'm not full of panda knowledge and i always envisage rust repairs if i buy a panda which again would = £££s if you can't do it. Heck give me £1k and you can have my 1.2 16v cinq lol - i might even give you some change haha.

A grand would also get you a PuntoGT, probably one that needs fettling though.

But Eklipze3k's suggestion of searching everything in carandclassic under £1k is a good one - just make sure you select 'in the UK' as well ;)

Under £1000 for a 200SX?

S13 shells are £1,500 these days.

Punto HGT would be worthwhile. With a few bits from a 16V Fiat Coupe Turbo you've got a real rip snorter.
