Hi all,

Just bought a 2001 Ulysee JTD. It has already beein in the garage and had a new exhaust as the old one fell off 2 days after buying it. The day before the exhaust fell off an orange light on the dashboard appeared and we started loosing power, which after the exhaust fell off we thought that was it but the light is still on. The Turbo isnt kicking in. The fanbelt was squeaking so we had that replaced too, but since then there is a knocking noise when we do a full lock on the steering and we still get a small squek every now and then. We started loosing power again today. Without these issues the car is brilliant to drive and we have yet to see its full potential. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing these problems, We are new to fiats so unsure were to start. Our local garage thinks we may need a new power steering pump and Crank Shaft pully, but he isnt 100%, so dont really want to spend all that money on just a maybe.

Thankyou for your time in reading this, I know its a bit longwinded and im sure we will probably come across more faults as we have only had the Ulysee for just over 1 week.

Does anybody have any idea on what could be happening, as 3 different garages have said 3 different things and dont want to waste money where its not needed. 1st said crank shaft pully but not 100%, 2nd said timing tensioner 100% and 3rd said injectors not 100%. they all said it will be a matter of trying and eliminating :bang:. i was loosing power again this morning and ive noticed it uses more fuel when it happens :( and the car looses rpms even with accelerator to the floor:confused:

please if someone has a slight idea, or has experienced similar can you let me know.

air mass flow meter try unplugging this and see if power is there this is on air filter box plastic plug in connection

Hi and thanks, just tried that and still runs the same, not too sure on what to look out for though , I have had our local garage put a new fuel filter on and we did get a boost of power for a few days but lost power again 2 days ago :bang: its really confusing me now as all the posts i have red which say about the amber also say about another warning light which i dont have:confused:.
Thanks again and any more advice will be greatly appreciated.

Now when i press the accelerator to the floor i get black smoke :( i wonder what else can go wrong :bang::bang:

I think the best thing you can do is find a decent independent who can plug your car in. The Ulysse (807/C8) is on the whole a womderful design, but was built to a junk price. Anything can fail and they are just rubbish in the main - I have a 2.2 Eleganza (2003) which amazingly has been ok so far - aside from the usual Engine anti pollution nonsense (probably down to me and having no cat or dpf filter) . But try to perserve, as they are actually a very good design and in my mind one of the most practical cars made.

Check for a split in the air pipe that goes under the engine, its plastic and can split and cause problems. As far as I can remember it is just on the engine side of the bell housing.(y)

Hi all,

Thanks for your advice.

Since my last post its been in the garage numerous time, had lots checked and the mechanics are unable to find any problems as to the loss of power. No holes or cracks in tubes or pipes. What we did find is when the fan belt was changed, it keeps sliding (as if to nearly fall off) so think new pullies or fan belt tensioner, according to some garages its fan belt tensioner, others say the ulysse doesnt have one its automatic). will let you know how that gets on, (the last garage had it for 2 days and still hadnt looked at it, even though hes the one who changed the fan belt and we had booked it in for a specific time on both days:bang:)

But just been talking to a mechanic in a pub, and he says that it sounds like its in limp mode, which makes sense as the car started loosing power the day before the exhaust fell off . he said he will look at it tomorrow and plug it in to his diagnostics.

My question is.... the loss of power started the day before the exhaust fell off, but when we had the new exhaust put on the mechanic didnt reset the EOBD (amber light on dash), could this be why the car is driving the way it is (limp mode)??

Again if anyone has any answers, advice or anything  can you please let me know. Thanks again.

Re: New and need help please problem solved

Just an update, think the car is finally sorted, thanks to talking to a random mechanic in a pub, (after spending a fortune in garages). The lack of power and EOBD where due to the turbo relay switch, the fan belt was wrong so he changed that too (but had to change the timing tensioner, due to the garage putting the wrong belt on :tosser:), and he did all the work for us, all for a great price of £50 (cheap I know, and thats including the parts too:D).

Now what was a new car to us a few months back now feels like a complete new car all over again. It has never ran as good as this since we got it.(y)

He did say there are 5 different types of belts for a Ulysse, so you have to make sure you get the right one, and even though the car is a fiat it has a peugeot engine (which peugeot are apparently brilliant for diesel engines)

Thank to all who gave advise it was really appreciated.:D(y)
