need help with rims and tyres

my brava 1.6 (A) 1997 model is getting a new look. the body is sprayed pearl white, and in fact my car stylist has customised some bodykit for me. problem: he says i should change my current 14" rims to 17" ones. my mechanic is not happy, stating that it affects braking distance, increase speedometer, affects comfort of ride.

spoke to few people, they suggested 16" instead. i know zilch of tyres and wheels..so i need some specific recommendations of the tyre profile and in your opinion should i go for 16 or 17 ( any difference?) just dont want people making some fast bucks out of me. btw....try to make me look like i know what i'm talking about ok guys? ta!

your mechanic is right. . .

but unless your doign quarter miles or track days i dont think going to bigger wheels is goign to make a lot of difference, apart from snapping the odd driveshaft if your car is lowered too lol

if your getting a bodykit you definately need bigger wheels - just look at:
