National speed limit to be cut?

THE government is to cut the national speed limit from 60mph to 50mph on most of Britain’s roads, enforced by a new generation of average speed cameras.



The reduction, to be imposed as early as next year, will affect two thirds of the country’s road network. Drivers will still be able to reach 70mph on motorways and dual carriageways and 60mph on the safest A roads.
Jim Fitzpatrick, the roads minister, defended the plan, which will be the most dramatic cut since 1978, when the national speed limit was reduced from 70mph to 60mph.

Is it just me or is this a bit OTT? For as many speeding maniacs as there may be on the roads it seems theres equally as many Sunday drivers who'll happily sit at HALF the limit, if that, causing the following traffic to get frustrated and take chances to pass?!

Average speed cameras are the most horrendous piece of garbage ever produced. As they've said in Top Gear, you spend all your time watching your speed and making sure you don't go over. And if you do, you're trying to work out the averages and then while you're doing that, you end up crashing into the person in front...it makes my blood boil.

Honestly, when the feck are the government actually going to listen to motorists instead of the eco-mentalist brigade on their recycled paper solar powered bicycles?! The nearest they seem to get to asking the motoring public these questions are probably Mr and Mrs Farquar who drive a diesel Rover 100 everywhere at 25mph, usually in the wrong lane and indicating right when they're going straight on.

Autobahns, that's what we need. Big, stonking, unlimited autobahns :laugh4:

I dont often drive the country roads but when I do I love it. UNTILL you get stuck behind smoeone doing 40/50 Imagine if that was the speed all the time

I've seen a few regular motors heading out of Peterhead at night, sat at 30mph as far as Boddam..it's as dangerous as people fleeing on all the time.

I don't think its up to much to be honest,yes its a good thing that it might save lives on our roads but to be honest its just going to turn into another government stealth tax for the motorists cot speeding by doing 50+ in a 50 and apart from the points on you license the chancellor is just going to be seeing pound signs:furious:

ther is a 50mph area on the motorway from monkton(outside ayr) to kilmarnock. its hard keeping to 50mph and very irritating
