I am currently partially stranded whilst on holiday, (albeit in a relative's driveway), whilst the RAC breakdown / mechanics decide whether the 8140 43S / 244 series 2.8JTD engine in my Ducato motorhome has a crankshaft sensor.... From my online enquiries it seems it does, as well as a speed sensor and camshaft sensor. So far from three visits they have voiced opinions by 2-1 that there is NOT a crankshaft sensor. All a little confusing methinks!
Only one mechanic reckons he has found such item. the other two reckon it doesn't have one.
All this because of an intermittent starting fault.
The engine starts and then runs well but I have paused / cancelled the holiday as I am reluctant to continue in case the engine refuses to start and I get completely stuck somewhere.
Any advice would be welcome.

Thank you.

At rear of engine attached to metal bracket. See photo. Starting fault may be due to camshaft sensor, which is only used when starting the engine to determine the stroke. Not used thereafter. The camshaft sensor is under the engine top cover at the RHS end of the engine. Not simple to remove cover. as it has a proijection under the injector cables at LHS of engine. Engine lifting bracket needs removing to allow cable movement.
