Hi

I'm hoping someone with better knowledge than me will be able to help:
I've got a 52 plate 5 door JTD, 32,000 miles

Its suddenly developed a metallic sounding rattle when going over bumps, comes from the front nearside (left)
It sounds like its coming from behind the glovebox as if I've left a spanner loose under the bonnet (I haven't!).
Its not rev or speed related, just when a bump is hit, even a small one like a manhole cover.

I can't find anything obvious loose in the engine bay, and have replaced the wiper linkage as that seemed to be the area of the noise and it was a bit worn, but that hasn't helped at all.

I see other threads about noisy front suspension and that it might be a worn drop link.
Would that make the sort of noise I'm getting?

Thanks in advance for anyone's experience.

Busted spring, look for the half coil pinging around in the spring cup....

Thanks for your help, I've certainly hit a few potholes recently so I'll check out those ideas.

Thanks again.

Dont forget to let us know the result of the Big Diagnostic Test lol! (y)

Last year I had rattle on n/s turned out to be the spring catcher device had broken, took it off and did a few welds on it and all ok now ,,worth having a good look around that area

Well I checked it again tonight and immediately spotted the bit of broken spring bouncing around- spot on Ffoxy- easy when you know where to look!

Thanks for all the ideas, I'll see about getting it sorted next.

Im another with the rattle.
How do you get to this spring cup?

Serious?

Feel over the top of the wheel / tyre down a bit from the top, its at the bottom of the large coil spring. Alternatively, take off the wheel and all is visible, have a furkle around where the spring seems to end in the spring cup itsel. If not that it could be drop-link, thats a straight metal bar just underneath said spring, aroun 8 - 10 inches long - ish.
