Mines always used some oil (although no more than the 1.8 did beforehand), to the tune of ~0.5 litre per 1,000 miles, split between a few weeps and being burnt. Some may consider that a bit excessive, but other than tyres and pads not much else has gone wrong in 4 years, which for a 20 year old car is fine by me. If yours has say suddenly jumped to say 1 litre or more per 1,000, I would think that there could be an issue, sticky rings or valve stems, or similar. If so a dose of redex might help.

Unfortunately I'm a bit of a luddite when it comes to choice of oil , whereby unless you lived in the middle of death valley, or in the arctic circle, or thrashed it round a racetrack, I wouldn't (and in fact don't) use anything other than 10-40 semi synthetic, which I put in everything I have (cars, bikes, lawn mower, etc). No doubt some folk on here who are oil experts will tell you that anything less than using the finest racing oil is insufficient, but there you go.
