For some months a rattle could be heard from the front end of my 1.4 16v, especially on rough surfaces. Of course it could come from any of a number of sources but it turned out to be a broken spring on the passenger side. The break was hard to spot as it was in the bottom holding cup of the strut. New spring fitted and noise disappeared.
