Panda (Classic) My white '88' 4x4.

Introduction

Well Charmania has one, as does the blue clx and Barbara's 4x4, so I'm starting a thread for my white 4x4 in order to keep a record of the work in one place. :)

This was it when I first took ownership about 18 months ago. It had just come out of a five year period of storage and had no tax or mot, 54,000miles on the clock, but did look to be in pretty good condition.

After closer inspection at home I found it to be really really good :). only one area of rust thanks to it being thoroughly waxed from new. This was the usual area at the back of the sill, only the o/s though, the n/s was fine. This had to be repaired for the mot but I can't remember much being needed.........

I soon had it all polished up and fitted some alloys........

About a year ago while I was servicing it disaster struck :(. When I removed one of the spark plugs a tiny piece of metal fell into the cyl. without me knowing, so when I started the engine it made one hell of a racket. I had to remove the head to get it out and renewed the cambelt and tensioner at the same time.
Unfortunately the big end bearing in that cyl. had suffered. I drove it like this till last November and then decided i would change the engine for a 40,000 miler I had spare. This engine change was an excuse to completely refurb the engine bay. I moved workshops while doing this so a month became three, then the front suspension was done too, so three months became six etc. etc.

Anyway, it was all done by April this year.............

More recently the fun stuff has started. Alloy wheels were changed for 127 Palio alloys I painted black and white. I also tracked down a wheel arch trim kit from Italy. New 4x4 decals were fitted to the rear wings, and a radio/cassette with four speakers were fitted to the interior.......

This is how it currently stands but further upgrades are in the pipeline. A sump guard is in the making and a pair of Boulder bars (I think that's what they're called) will follow.........

The bar in the last pics was just a test piece and is too short, the final bars will run the full length of the sill. They're made of 35mm tubing, a nice small size just right for Pandas but because they have a diamond pattern pressed into them they are as strong as much larger tubing :)

I'm trying to make all non original parts removable so that it can easily be returned to standard, I know some some people prefer this.

It's also been to a few car shows recently and gets a lot of positive feedback from the general public, especially with the Panda tent on the back. In fact six weeks ago at the Beaulieu Italian car day it was voted joint runner up by the attending public, tying will a Lamborghini Gallardo. The Lambo only managed it because it was a special edition they only made 250 of and named it after one of their test drivers :p.

Phew, that's pretty much up to date now so will post any future work from here.
i find it funny, and scary how the wheel of the hummer is as tall as the bonnet of a panda :/
however out of the two, you all know what one i would rather have :)

hehe i have just acquired 4 nice round spot lights. (same as the ones on the red ford in the last picture, back a page)

all seem good. also got my hands on 8 amber lights, about 3 x 2 rectangle shape. they were thrown in free hehe, 24 volt bulbs though but take standard indicator bulbs.

also found out that the non aircon punto alternator (on 1.2 engines up) is rated at 65 amps so i must acquire one. only issue is the pulley on them are multi V belt, but can soon swap them over, or just get the multi V belt crank pulley for my panda hehe

I've now got an extra set of wheels with normal, quiet! tyres, so now I have the option of fitting them for general use and keeping the offroad tyres for bad weather and shows. Of course this option will pass to the new owner when it sells. :)

They are Lancia Thema / Y10 turbo alloys, 14" x 5.5" with 165/65/14 tyres. With 10mm spacers on the back wheels they fit really nicely. They are also a little taller than the Palio set so help raise the gearing a little.

They don't have the same impact as the other set but still look good I think, they are definitely alot quieter! :p

It's gone! :)

Dad Bob and Son Toby came to take their new Panda home today........

Bob runs a company called 'Wheelspin Motorsport', it's an activity centre where groups of children and adults can go to do fun stuff like canoeing, climbing, offroading etc.

Don't panic, I'm sure the Panda won't be hammered around the 4x4 course by hoards of manic teenagers, Bob will be using it as his own personal runaround and sounds like he will be very protective of it.

Toby is in to classic cars and will very soon be able to drive legally on the road, that's when he and Bob will be fighting over the keys. ;)

I'm very pleased that it's gone to a family that will look after it and fully appreciate it's qualities while they're at it. Have fun Guys! (y)

Ι have to say you 're The Panda whisperer!!!!!
All your panda 's look fantastic.!!!!

Vern,

I love what you have done with this.. I just got my self some 156 seats. I like how you made a custom mount to go into the rails of the panda. But I need to ask. What did you do with the seatbelt clip?

As mine is attached to my original seats.

Regards,

Isaac

Hi Isaac,

You may find that the Panda seatbelt clips into the Alfa buckle fine. If not you can bolt the Panda buckle to the Alfa seat, I seem to remember I had to bend part of it flat to do this.

Cheeky snapperatzi. ;-)

Something that has concerned me. You put 14's on to gear the car up a bit. When talking about my 88 4x4 the owner said at 50mph the car's screaming. My mkI 4x4 did the speed limits with ease and my mkII's needle would cross a hundred. Are 88's slower or has this guy never found fifth gear (if the 10mm bolt has fallen out of the linkage)?

Screaming engine is very subjective.

That's what I'm thinking. Really looking forward to the car arriving some time soon. :)
I have the grey and black Punto GT wheels and a set of tyres between them to gear my car up. I used to get 45mph out of my Puch Maxi so 50 out of a Puch Panda does sound a bit tame. :-/
