Technical My multi i is overheating (petrol 1.6) 2001 x reg

my cars (fiat multipla) started making a knocking noise since yesterdat and has been getting to the higher end of the thermostat (5 bars and occasionally 6). getting abit concerned, the fan HAS been kicking in but why is it overheating, no mayo on the gasket so thats good yeah???? help Is the knocking related? There is oil and water for def.

Thermostat stuck shut possibly......not doing your lump any favours,dont drive till sorted !!
