the best possible performance gains are achieved when you take advantage of enclosed filters (pipercross viper, BMC CDA etc). they remain isolated from the hot air in the engine bay, and if the intake pipe is positioned in the path of oncoming air you also get a gain from the increase in air pressure when moving at speed, since higher pressure air is easier to take in.

the mk2 1.8 can be remapped, the mk1 can be chipped. either way you're looking at approx 5bhp for a lot of money. its cheaper & faster to get an HGT.
