It seems odd that yours always sits at half and everyone else's sits at 1/4 when driving and 1/2 when in traffic.
My 1.2 Punto SX did EXACTLY the same as my Bravo TD and the 1.4. And guess what? I even changed the stat in my Punto so it definately could not of been that. (I Blown headgakset - not realising - and then it overheated badly, causing the thermostat to cease to function)
This is gonna be one of them arguments that will never go away.
It should sit at 1/2 when in traffic - lol
This is because the water is not being forced around the engine at speed, hence the more revs u are doing the faster the water get's around the system.
If your idling in traffic then the water gets around your system slow, so the heat goes up. Hence why the fan comes on.
the temp gauge on my 115 hlx sits bang smack in the middle once warmed up, not changing more than about 1/10th of a notch no matter what the weather or driving conditions.
I assume this is fine, because the performance is bang on, and it returns 35mpg if i dont go silly.
I have just done 320 miles on about 36 litres (bit more scientific than £ since I pay 74.9 ppl). About 220 of which were on the motorway doing 80 - 100mph. the rest was driving in London. Don't think I did that bad considering.
Also the temp gauge on my MK2 1.6 16v is always on the half way point once warm.

My 1.4's temp gauge always sits at half as well, the consumption on mine is not to be mentioned. ( usually depressing 1.4 figures)
I really noticed the guzzle as i previously had a hyundai accent coupe 1.3, that sipped the petrol and was a fast little sh*tbox
Stu
I drove a Hyundai Accent Bari 1.3 for 2 years as my first car before my Bravo, they are ok chaeply made, dont look great, they look ok, fun looking so to speak, but yeah the petrol consumption was very low. I managed in upwards of 60 miles to £5 of petrol.
