Punto (Mk2/2b) My '99 P2 Sporting turbo-converted.

'99 Punto mk. II 1,2 16v Sporting.

Retrofittet turbocharger with the following components:

Engine:

Fully rebuild original 1,2 16v (80 bhp) with JE forged oversize Pistons with 9:1 compression, steel head gasket and inlet manifold with 4 ekstra injectors controlled by a Perfectpower SMT6 piggyback with an extra boost capable MAP sensor. Intercooler front-mounted. Exhaust: Hand build 2" stainless steel downpipe and all the way back to a 1747 HGT back box. No cat or mid silencer.

First fit was a Garrett T2 turbo, but was converted to a Garrett T25. Boost pressure 0,4 bar in eco mode, and now 0,9 bar in powermode. With the T2 the result was 130 hp and 205 nm, and now with the T25 - 160 hp and 230 nm.

230nm in torque looks more impressive than it is.... its actually only about 169lbf.ft

but even so, 160 and 169 from a 1.2 is fookin impressive...

id personally want a nice twin pipe exhaust and gettin the engine bay tarted up a bit and that is a truely awesome italian sleeper.

always makes me laugh watchin american car programmes with 5.7l chevy engine pushing out a massive 500bhp when the europeans can get 160 from a 1.2 :worship:

they use the theory of No replacement for displacement though instead of getting more from a smaller block they'll just throw in a bigger block, which is why they dont do corners

Nope, the intercooler isn't from a specific car. It's more the size of a Iveco Daily JTD though..

Garret T25 is quite a big turbo for a 1.2, is it very laggy? thats the standard turbo on a Nissan 200sx S13. Good work mate, as custard said nice to see someone has actually got off their arse and built the thing they say they're gonna.

Is there more plans for it??

Well, the T2 was actually better if only looking for very little lag, but less power later in the RPM range.

With the T2 the result was only 130 bhp at 0,75 bar, and raising the boost together with more fuel didn't help much, due the that the T2 got very hot at that boost.

With the T25, the lag is of course more present, but not more than expected. With the same boost as the T2, the T25 makes 15 bhp more - and the T25 manages the 0,2 bar more boost much better than the T2 in terms of not getting hot. The T2 simply wasn't enough when the goal was 160 bhp, but the T25 handles it as it was born to do it

The boost comes on at around 1.800 RPM and reaches 0,9 bar at 3.000 RPM

The 230-some torque is reached at 4.000 RPM like original, its just twice the amount! The bhp max is reached at 6.300 RPM, also around the original RPM's.

At present, no further plans is on the roadmap, because I expect this result is what to expect at max, without changing rods and crankshaft. It was expensive enough to lower the compression with special-made pistons! Also, rememeber the standard gearbox - the clutch is a harder specialmade version though.

Sounds like a well thought out and executed conversion.. Don't think the car needs much more doing to it from where i'm sitting. Maybe as mentioned already clean and spruce up the engine bay a bit. No pics of interior either so no idea whats going on in there already but some little changes individualise it a bit and you got a car i'm very jealous of indeed.

The engine bay has been cleaned since the pictures were taken - the fotoshoot was made during the conversion in Februrary, in a snowy and salty road condition in Denmark.

The engine parts hasn't been polished or anything, not to upset potential police officers looking in the engine bay Everything, exept the 4 extra injectors, more or less - looks stock.

The interior hasn't been changed a bit, to keep the neat stock look.

You've got the ride height absolutely spot on! And the choice of wheels make that one of the smartest punto's i've seen!
