I'm rather proud of myself now!

Ok, I'm gonna risk getting shot down in flames here, but what is it ?

Rob

I'm glad you asked that... I was hoping for some guesses.. but as ash had about 10 guesses and wasn't getting anywhere I will tell you.

It's

A

Turbo Timer...

In short.. wen i turn the car off and lock it up and walk away.. the car will run for the pre set time... 30secs is enough for short trips.

Gets some strange looks.. its like a very bad case of after run you can get on old coked up cars!! :) lol

but if that is your first mod, and none of the bravos had a turbo, is it not a little pointless, unless its a diesel?

well 2nd mod if u count the re-map.. but Nige did that... and the radio change isn't really a mod.. just a swop... so this is my propper 1st.

Yes is a JTD... so it is worth it!

lol Rob...

Ok basically.. it keeps the car running after you've turned the key off and left the car.

This is so the turbo has time to wind down and keeps the oil being pumped to the turbo while it slows down b4 the engine stops.

it just saves me sitting in the car for 30 secs with the engine running while the turbo winds down.

All that time im saving :) :p

Well, they say you learn something every day !

I've never heard of such a device nor an engine that needs one. I've had a few turbo diesels in my time and that's a new one on me.

Rob

used to be a thing with petrol turbos like the renualt 5

if ur driving fast then pull up the turbo is still running fast. if you then turn the engine off the oil flow stops from the engine leaving the turbo with no oil and stil spining which wears out the bearings more quickly and buggars the turbo. manufacturers used to reccomend sitting in the car for 1min and letting the car idle to prolong the turbo!

that device tommy has basically does the job for you

with a normal turbo diesel it wouldnt really be an issue but as tommys is angel tuned to something silly the turbo is running a bit faster when he stops so its just a precaution to avoid any expense further down the line

Im Driven to Earn, and I Earn to Drive......

ITs actually got nowt to do with the turbo spinning and wearing the bearings. The turbo stops pretty quickly simply due to the drag of the hydrodynamic bearings and the fact its got a compressor on the end of the shaft causing a LOT of drag.

Its actually to do with heat. After a good blat the turbo will be fookin hot. (turbos on petrol cars will glow red, diesels run a lot cooler though) If you just stop the engine the oil flow stops and the oil that remains basically boils, which is bad as it gums up the seals and the bearings with carbon. The result is a smokey turbo.

But surely on a modern turbo diesel this isn't an issue ? My Mondeo TDCi pushes out close to 150bhp and there's no need for one, so how an Angel Tuned JTD could need one is a tad perplexing. No disrespect to Tommy, but that's the sort of mod you'd expect to see on a high powered turbo'd petrol car, not an oil burner.

Still, whatever floats your boat :)

Rob

Its good practice to let it run at idle for a few seconds on ANY car really. I let my diesel van sit and idle for ~30 secs while I gather up all my junk after a gig and thats a big lazy 100BHP 2.4ltr 6cly.

i think it's more to do with how you drive it. If you thrash the hell out of it then turn it off then it may be useful but if you drive steady for the last minute then it's as good as leaving it to tick over. If you just pootle around like most drivers then your not working the turbo anyway.

If you ever get chance to play with a powerful petrol turbo car then thrash it, stop and look at the turbo, it goes a cherry colour :)

"....and thats a big lazy 100BHP 2.4ltr 6cly"

Is that you or the van Tom ?!?! ;)

I do the same. Whenever I pull up at a client's premises or at home, I leave the engine running whilst I disconnect my phone/GPS etc, just so I can keep the AC going and stay cool ;)

Rob

look... i didn't do it cos it might need it.. i just thought the idea sounded cool!!!

its a mod... stop asking if it was nessecery :p :)

I would have prefered it if the ciggy lighter was there as standard. I don't smoke so I only use it for tyre pump etc. Would be more handy.
