Music Install Problem

Yeah, i understand this would come to mind, but i had turned the gain right down, and still some tracks - even just at volume 14 - cut out.

Had the components unhooked so amp is just powering sub, which means there should be plenty power going through, but it would still clip at the same volume :s

the amp has set power levels going to each channel. unhooking the comps quite rightly shouldn't make a jot of difference to the amp output. Get to a meet, or fins a friend with an amp, and try connecting their amp.
I find it odd though that with my sony cd plauyer it was fine, but with your kenwood it clips.
clearly the HU or amp are going to need replaced.

Probably a dumb question, but have you got the right amp wiring kit?

Just a suggestion lol

Chris, I fitted his amp wiring kit. Its a branded 4AWG witing kit with gold plated connectors, and the earth block i used was WAY over the minimum spec. £12 for 2 foot of earth cable and a gold contact mount.
So its not the wiring. personally I still think the HU or amp themselves are at fault. Its clipping at a loud, but not unreasonable volume. I'd expect more from the equipment in there...

On another note, does anyone know where i can pick up some decent noise suppression. Fitted my own amp sub, and rear coaxials today and am getting a heavy dose of alternator whine :( bugger.
@Tom/Ash etc, whats the best way to fix this. apart from fitting those inling RCA filter things which are over a tenner EACH, and i need TWO!

Thanx, would be great if you could help out Andy, but I'm going to be in London from Friday this week, then back to Scotland for a bit :( (all this travelling makes me feel like a salesman!)

Suppose I'm going to have to ask a friend for a favour back up in Scotland, so I can steal their amp for a bit to see if that's the problem :s

got any up here? ;)

Ash, Tom, i'm going to use a different bolt to connect my amp earth, as the one thats on is coated, so i presume its non-conductive. I'm also going to sand some more paint off and stick a blob of copper grease on. From the posts i've dug up using the search tool, thats what usually gets blamed. Its not like its crackling or anything, just the pitch changing when the revs build and drop. I still think it will require some sort of ground loop isolator though.
iirc theres a mod that involves replacing the alternator cables or something? cant find any posts regarding it, but i imagine a couple of feet of 4AWG or better will be a positive imrovement on the existing vables, if thats all the mod requires? as i say, i dont remember exactly.

Get it down to bare metal and then the thinnest of smears of coppaslip.

thats what i meant ;)
i rubbed the paint off before i had made the cable up, and the connector was bigger than i realised, so theres rom for more bare-metal contact area than i made in the first instance. i'll let ya know how that goes tomorrow...
