Bit of a problem.

Everytime i put volume up past a certain notch, the amp cuts out, and the Protect Light comes on...and then all is fine..and off again..it keeps clipping every few seconds, until i put the volume down, then all is well.

The amp, a JBL-GTO-75.4, has a sub(JBL-GTO1202D) and a pair of upfront pioneer comps running off it.

Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening??

Thanx in advance

P.S - If it's any help, it appears the more bass I apply, the less the volume needs to be before it clips (i have gain right down, and i can adjust bass from HU, and thats always right down)

probably a faulty amp trip switch, check all earths and wireing

Yeah, earthing is all fine. How to check amp trip switch..what is it? :S

I had the same issue last week - It was actually my faulty Sony HU! Replaced for my 3 year old Alpine and now works a treat. How strange!

was it doing it with the Sony CDX-M850MP cd player that was in it before?

your not having much luck with that atif :D

and come on how loud do you want to play the final fantasy soundtrack at :D LOL :D hehe ;)

on the otherhand cant really remember what caused that when i had my vibe amps 3 year ago :) it may be thermal protection as the amp may be running hot so try and fit a couple of pc fans onto the vents if you can :)

Don't be knocking the FF soundtrack...I own 7's and it kicks ass in a nerdy kinda way :)

Its definitely not thermal. Its mounted exactly as i had my 6ch amp, and as soon as its turned on it does it. I stood in a KFC car park, freezing my fingers off with Atif looking at the wiring etc, and it all checked out. :S had me stumped, but that doesn't mean its not something really basic, lol

As above really. I don't think it's wiring either, as all was fine when the Sony HU was in it...but when changing the HU and finally getting my Kenwood one in (had a few connecter probs)...the clipping started :S

Hey Darren, you know of any ICE people around Dundee i can have this checked out by?

Many, many years ago when I used to have a large sound system in one of my cars, I had a similar problem...

Turn the volume up, and the amp would cut out..

Found the fault to be with the speakers... The little wires that go between the main connectors, and the cone... where they vibrated so much, they touched, and cut the amp..

Not sure if this kind of thing happens in newer speakers, but defo was a problem 8+ years back..

hey atif try kevin piries the boy loved my car haha but hes really good with electrics but here is three options for you to try

kevin piries
SAS which is next door to piries
and dundee car audio - boy knows his stuff but hes an arogent **** most of the time :D its on the hilltown bout half way up near the big green welcome finance place

Cool, thanx for replies :)

I'll try SAS first - i've been going to them for nearly everything since the first time we talked about them - they're really good!

Hopefully get it sorted before i move...don't want clipping music during the 7-8 hour drive!

speak to scott atif hes a good laugh and worked for fiat for about 13 years :) so he knows a little about them hes the one with the ginger hair just tell him i sent you :D they are the ones who did my car for me

Kick ass, nice one!

Isn't he the one who had a Punto, and did it up etc? I think he is the one who answers the phone most of the time..if it is, then he def. good guy - im due to go in on thursday about a squeeling i can't pinpoint, so will mention the msuic then! :)

whats the squealing? is it when steering, or roundabouts, or bumps, or just when the engine is running?

Finally found this post again - I'm really useless with the search facility! :p

Squealing sounds when going mostly over bumps and sometimes when braking. Have got new pads and discs all round, and have been told by two different places the suspension is okay, so could not/can not think what it could be. It's not that loud, and makes e wonder if it is able to be heard outside!

new shocks buddy. I'm almost 100% sure thats what you need. If you think the car felt alot better after the tracking, and new brakes all round, wait till you feel the difference with now shocks.
it COULD be that you need to replace the bumpstops. and i know that the arb droplink bushes were changed last year, so i'm even more inclined to blame knackered shocks, and possibly bumpstops

Well, i'll just have to take it to an english garage and see what their opinion is on this!

Hmph - garage have told me they can't find what the problem might be with my install. Have suggested I try another amp, as they think this may be causing the clipping :(

Since I don't have another amp, can anyone suggest anything - maybe take it to someone else around the Canterbury area to have a look?

I have to say I doubt there is a fault with anything execpt the user.

Very likely you're simply expecting too much from the amp and its cutting out when you try and drive it too hard.
