Have you been out and about again Peter?

Reminds me of Positano.

Ah, Positano Yellow my favourite FIAT colour ;).
And Sean, I have only been out in the modern 500 recently. But I would love to replicate that evocative photo with Murphio as the focus.
Just a cold looking photo, from today, of Findhorn without a Fiat.

....but today we did head out in the car...back to Findhorn, which is a fascinating place for many people. A walk on the beach and back via the supermarket.

This is the best bit of the photo, nice door shuts, and good paint.

Good job, roll on the spring.

Sorry, no picture today. I was out yesterday to collect a spare part for my increasingly aged, modern car. The wind was so bad that I could barely achieve 30mph where I can normally do 50+.
Great on the way back with the wind beneath my wings; I hit the magic 60 at one stage. :)

God knows what the brakes were like at 60, with all that extra shove in the back? ;) ;)

...very much like they are at 10mph:eek:
Fiat 500 brakes...much maligned and under-rated!
We've been confined to barracks with the weather recently, but today was sharp and bright so the car was shunted out for a changeover at our holiday cottage. I got caught out slightly as there was a bit of salt on the road.
Murf doesn't like the proper cold; starts OK but takes ages to warm up and is very embarrassing on the big A road I have to take after half a mile.:p
Eventually runs great but I topped him up with Super, just to be sure.

I took, the new 500 out for a run today, the sun was out and roads were nice and dry. While driving I was thinking it was a shame I didn't have more time to take the old one out too. Then I remembered that I need to change out front and rear springs before taking it out again.

If it's still nice at the weekend, I'll swap the springs and get it out.

cheers, Steve

I still need to take out the rears on Murf to put in the proper housings for the top rubbers.
He was running a bit funny today; hard to describe, but slightly seeming to misfire at times with no strange noises..just slight hesitation for a moment. I had also been getting a "phut" from the exhaust in between gear changes. So I checked the points "gap" and found none. Reset at 0.5mm and problem solved.:)
But I noticed an issue with the big pin on which the dynamo strap swivels. It has worked its way out and has done this before. I loosened the strap, knocked in the pin and retightened. By the time I got home it was loose again. Anyone else have this problem? I think I will drill it and fit a split pin

My thousandths post so I will let you have the pleasure Peter.:D

Doesn't the pin have a threaded hole in it, that the bolt for the clamp is meant to screw into, to stop it moving?

Flattered, to be sure:thumbup:
The one with the threaded bolt is at the other end of the strap and the tension it creates should be maintaining my problem one in position. I think the strap must have a slight twist or stretch in it. The pin can't fall out because of the pulley guard, but I worry about the strain if might be putting on the little studs that hold the dynamo to the cowling.

Yes you are right getting myself confused. It must be twisted as you would expect there to be equal pressure on each side of the pin to stop it shifting. I assume you can't tightened the clamp bolt below any more?

The long setscrew is as tight as seems sensible but perhaps I'll go tighter.
I had a brainwave that if I remove the pin and put it back the other way round, access permitting, the shoulder will prevent it from falling out seeing as it always moves in the same direction.:)
I still like the idea of a split-pin to keep it in place.
It's a nuisance as I was planning to drive down to Oban in Murf but felt safer with the modern, although that has a few loose bits too.
He did me proud though; left out all night and he got covered in frozen rain. He still started at -3C so I could put him in the garage. A good power wash underneath and some TLC is on the cards for next week.

We had some properish snow on Saturday night and I went out to test the car...it grips better than the modern. Would have been handy when I almost got stuck over on The Lecht a few weeks ago.

I took off the undertray from the engine and Tony was right, the dynamo screw needed even more tightening. First I loosened it and lubricated with copper grease. Then I really went for it as now I could see what I was doing. I also had to tighten the belt. I am now down to no spacers. These modern belts must surely be too long.
I discovered why Murf has seemed a bit louder than usual; there is a hole in the silencer and a bigger one in the tailpipe. The exhaust was the one fitted when I bought the car and at least I got 18 months out of it. It might explain why I was getting a popping from the exhaust last week.
Many moons ago Tony pointed out that you must use special pipe for the brake fluid supply. I thought I had but when I saw beads of fluid on the outside I knew it had to be changed. It might explain a mystery problem I had a while ago with air getting into the system.
I have been spraying some handy wax that I got from Toolstation. It's great for all the corners you are looking at when working under the car.
More fiddling and fettling to come.
