Hi

I have a Fiat Multipla 1.6 Petrol. We recently had the head gasket replaced. Due to work and looking after the kids, I could not get it to Fiat in Slough so I got a Mobile Servicing Company to do the work.

When the car came back, it made a slight engine noise. I was told it needed a Cam Belt kit, so was persuaded to replace the Cambelt.

When the car came back, there was a significantly louder Grrrrr sort of whirring noise.....

The engine starts and runs ok ish..
As I accellerate, the Grrrrrrrrrrrr noise increases dramatically then goes away as the engine gets around 3000 rpm.

The guy who did the work, says it was the exhaust. I got that checked and it definitely is not the exhaust.

The engine sometimes stops dead for no reason at low RPM, while reversing or going around a slow corner.

Does anyone have any suggestions what it could be?

Many Thanks
Kind Regards

Rob

Was the tensioner replaced when the cam belt was replaced?
It may be the tensioner is on the way out or the belt may be a little too tight and/or one of the ancillary bearings is on the way out, check deflection on one of the longer runs, if the belt hardly moves it's probably too tight.

Hi

We had the a "Cam-belt kit" fitted when they replaced the Head Gasket.
I assume the tensioner and Pully wheels are a part of the kit????

I will be taking it to a Fiat Dealer to have it diagnosed on Monday.
I will post the outcome next week.

I also have lots of little bubbles coming up from the engine into the coolant overflow bottle. The Bubbles increase when I rev the engine and they are there when the engine is hot or cold.

As mentioned earlier; the engine often just stops at low RPM, when coming to a stop or reversing; it just dies on us.

When Idling, the LED Light on the dash also flicers slightly

My concerns are;
  • Head Gasket was not fixed properley; or
  • White Coolant/Oil Mix Gunge in Engine when HG was blown may not have been flushed properly and may have since have blocked oil filter; restricting oil flow. (hence the noise is less at higher RPM as more oil is forced through the filter); or
  • Cam Belt Tensioners / Pulleys were not replaced or tension was set incorrectly; or
  • Cam Belt has been fitted incorrectly... Could the Grrrrrr be valves hitting pistons? (I hope not); or
  • Alternator is busy breaking apart; or
  • a combination of the above.
I will appreciate If anyone here has had a similar problem and can advise what they think the problem is.

Many Thanks

Have had the car checked by FIAT garage; they advise replacing Cambelt Kit, Inc rollers & Tensioners.

Will get that done tomorrow.

Thames Fiat were doing deals on timing belts when I had my Grande Punto 1.9 done late last year, I thought it was very reasonable and from memory £199 all in. Looks like your mobile mechanic used the old tensioner and pulley's to do the job. Do you have any way of claiming the cost back from him?

When we had our multi done there, it was a very unreasonable £400ish including labour.

Go elsewhere...

Looks like someone saw you coming a mile off for that kind of money!! I'd do Multiplas all day and all night if I was earning £400 a shot. When I did my Multipla I hired the tools to lock the crank and bought the timing belt kit from Ebay, which was a Fiat part. The tools were £30 for a week's hire and the belt kit was £119.00, the whole job took less than an hour and a half to do.
I got my Grande done by them cos it was being serviced there but they had menu pricing for all models.
The best thing is to shop around, I drove my Grande to Slough from Gloucester cos it was so much cheaper than the idiot dealership we have close to home.
