Technical Multipla engine cutting out

Heya all.
My W reg multipla 1.9 JTD has developed an annoying problem with the engine. It's been running fine up until 2 days ago when the engine suddenly cut out whilst I was sitting at the lights. It wouldn't start after half a dozen attempts so I pushed it to the side of the road and tried again, it started first time and I continued on my 300 mile round trip to Hull and back without further problems.
I went to town today and the problem returned. The engine cut out twice whilst doing 40+ MPH but restarted immediately so it just felt like a momentary power loss. It also cut out at the same set of lights again but this time started first time and it again cut out whilest coasting up to a junction on the way home. This time it wouldn't restart so I called the AA after about 20 minutes but whilst I was waiting for them I tried one more time and away it went. It took me home then with only one more power loss moment but has left me baffled and unable to trust it for work tomorrow.
There is never any warning that it's going to happen. I do get an injector warning light as it cuts out but I don't know if this would illuminate if the engine stops anyway.

Possible crank/phase sensor.

Is there a way to test it and where do I find it? Sorry, never had to work on Fiats or diesels before

Mmmmmmm you can check the resistance but you would need to do it while fault is there.

Might be worth getting the ECU error codes read,saving time & money in long run

Had a similar problem with my Multipla JTD its done 136K the engine just stop while I was drive, tryed to restat couldnt, waited for about 15min and then it would restart go for 3-5 miles then cut off again.I was just getting the engine system light on.Eventually took it to dealers, they discovered it was the the accererator sensor (dont know what that does) they replaced it and I havent had it cut out since.it cost me £107 in total to fix but that does included diagnostic check, the sensor it only about £30

Thanks for that guys. Found the problem:slayer:
Didn't want to pay £65 + VAT to Fiat for the CPU reading and it wouldn't have got there anyway so took it to the local garage who plugged his Sun computer into it for 30 quid. He pulled up a few fault codes. Most were harmless (glowplug problem etc....) but two possibilities. The timing belt tension sensor and, as T14086 :worship: had suggested, the crank sensor. He changed the crank sensor and said the timing belt tension was ok. It's run like a dream ever since . He did say the EGR valve was also throwing up a code and suggested I get it changed soon so I'll have to look into it.

BTW, I had to have the AA out at one point and his laptop said it had no fault codes so anyone else who experiences the same snag, don't just believe the roadside rescue guy, get it checked at a garage.

This seems to imply that different dealers have different pricing. I had exactly the same problem in April, but my local Fiat dealership only charged me £16.50 to read the ECU - and in the end a fraction over £80 to diagnose, supply and fit a new crank sensor. Anybody else seen such a wide variation?

Hi, my multipla loses power when the engine warning light comes on, had it tested the fault was a crankshaft sensor, changed that, ok for a month, then out of the blue, light comes on end loses power, no fault code, they are now guessing, any ideas?
