Ever since buying our Multipla (18 months ago) it has only averaged about 30mpg according to the trip computer and my calculations. When it is cold it sounds like a tank too. The Fiat dealers have checked the burn rates and put injector cleaner through but it still averages 30mpg (about 34 on a long run).

I was wondering what everyone else had been getting mpg wise from theirs?

I've got a Stilo MW 115 JTD and in normal use it does about 48mpg.
On a long run around the Highlands we got 60mpg at an average speed of 47mph.
I know the Multipla won't be quite as economical due to its bigger size but I wouldn't expect it to be that far behind.
Do you always drive it fully laden around town with a roof box on it?

We live out in the country and my wife usually does the school run and shopping trips. So usually just her. At the weekends then it's usually two adults and four kids (all under 10). I have (in the last week or so) tried driving REALLY carefully and managed upto 38mpg. I still can't help but think it should be better.

Is there any way the timing could be out? Just thinking out aloud due to it being VERY noisy when cold. If it is out could that effect the consumption?

Timing belt or chain is connected to the diesel fuel pump so I doubt it would run at all if it was faulty but I could be wrong.

ECU diagnostic or injecter cleaner could be useful.

Are the brakes binding on?

Sorry I have no answer yet but thought you would like to know I have a similar problem. My consumption is about 40 mpg but we know people who get 48 to 50 mpg.
The other interesting fact is the noise, as mine also sounds like a tractor but does not improve much when warm. Which is unbelievable for a modern HDI engine.
It has been back to the dealers many times now however they have never came up with any answer or constructive comments.
Some usless quotes being "we have changed your fuel filter" (with 6000 miles on it.), "we reset the trip computer" and "the diagnostics show its ok".
I have just wrote to Fiat UK and will not let it drop with the dealer so hopefully will get somewhere, however it has been going on for a year know.
