Hi all, so...clutch has just about given up on our family frog. im gonna have a go at changing it myself (and sort out the horrible gearbox leak its got too).
so what id like to know is anything i can do to make changing it that bit easier?!
cant really justify spending a small fortune on it again (changed loads of bits already) when its got 155000miles on it.
all help will be appreciated.

ive done clutches...but not on the multi.
Ive read a few threads out of interest and it would appear its best to bite the bullet and remove the subframe as working around it is not worth it.
So get your can of penetrating oil and get under there a day or two before hand and get plenty on the exposed threads if any..wire brush first if you can.
Wheres your oil leak??
Ive one on n/s drive shaft so replacing that seal as soon as it comes.
If youve oil at the bell housing its most likely engine crank seal bearing.
I have this leak but cant justify dropping the box for it alone...new enough clutch in there...

Marty.

I replaced the gearbox in my dads bug and it was a straight forward just. Took a bit of wiggling to get the gearbox out. I didnt drop the subframe. But i remember it was like a rubbix cube trying to get it out. Its pretty heavy aswell. I needed a hand lifting the new one into position. I done it on my drive with the car on axle stands. Its a DIY job with the right tools.

Hi monkeyste,
FYI, I had a problem where it was very difficult to engage gears, even with the clutch pedal hard on the floor. I found it it wasn't the clutch, rather the master slave cylinder (the spring inside had broken and hence not getting enough fluid with each press).
I don't know what your issue is, but if it's the same it could save you some money.
