probably 2 most dangerous motorways are m42 and m25 due to there gatso camera enforced variable speed limits was on m25 last week variable speed limit overhead sign was showing 60 mph as i approached it changed to 50 mph this happened in the space of 30 seconds all i could see was red brake lights in front of me im sure these variable limits have contributed to a lot of pile ups on the m25

in reply to johnny about about time this was made illegal sorry mate us truckers dont like it either blame the eu not us from 1st jan this year law changed so that any vehicle exceeding 3.5 ton is now limited to 56 mph this has caused chaos as before these vehicles where allowed to do 70mph our union u r t u campaigned for them to be limited to 60 mph thereby it would have given us all a chance as we would have been limited to 56mph 3.5 to 7.5 tons would have been 60 mph and coaches could have stayed as they are now at 62 mph a chance for us to pass each other but eu firmly turned it down speaking for myself if i see an empty lane and a chance to overtake i will if i see a line of cars likely to get held up i wont its called road etiquete after all haulage industry has a bad image to motorists and as professional drivers we ned to do all we can to improve this

Fair enough, unfortunately it seems that you're in a minority as most lorry drivers don't think twice (or look in their mirrors, usually...) before pulling into lane 2 and taking 3 or 4 minutes to pass another lorry, while a half-mile tailback forms behind them.

What I don't understand is why the big artics bother to overtake each other at all. All are limited to 56mph; the speed difference between them is negligible, so why don't the "faster" lorries just drop their speed rather than overtake? Going a tenth of a mile per hour slower will make no noticeable difference to journey times and will speed up progress for everyone else.

besbie what i mean is if you see a truck signaling to change lane and it is safe to do so flash your headlights this tells the truck driver that you are hanging back and it is safe to change lanes by doing this it is a great help to us

This deserves a thread of it's own. I do flash my headlights to say "after you Claude" and it's a big help on our overcrowded road for everyone. It is however a risk as if someone flashes you, and you pull out and get rammed, there it is in the highway code headlights may only be used to warn other road users of your presence. I do also put the headlights on when negoitiating a hazard, like today when I was passing the rubbish collection lorry with operatives on bonus skipping around at high speed, a queue of cars waiting to pass, traffic in the other direction, drives to houses and parked cars on both sides of the road....

Lorries are indeed supposed to be limited to 56mph, but i often see then doing 70mph. Must be some way to fool the governer. Majority of lorry drivers are fine, but some think because they are big, they can bully anyone they want by pulling out dangerously. Cannot see the point to this pointless exercise.

i agree with you johnny even as a trucker myself i notice some other truckers act like children when you are passing them and wont just drop off the gas for a second to let you pass them

The amount of traffic on motorways has rendered the rules of the motorway as non existent, as we seem to have people driving on them who have no idea what a slow or fast or "overtaking lane" means in road safety terms, I have had caravans overtaking me at over 70 in the outside lane!!!!!!

tell me about it, try the m6 between j 15 and 18 at 7am........ i have to get into left lane 3 miles before J18, otherwise it's a battle to move over.........tell you what seems to be this winter's trend, ppl havent a clue how to use lights either...............

:yeahthat:
do people seem to forget they have there fog lights on when its not fogy
it's not like you could ignore that big orange light on your dash board

also when it is fogy how many people do you see with there front fogs on but some how neglecting there rears

anyway back to mototrways i tend to drive in the outside lane as i'm normaly doing 100 pluss i just keep an eye out for them german besties doing a ton 20 behind me so i can pull in and let them past but i drive in heavy trafic jeneraly if the motorway became empty i whould move to the inside

I think you were on the same bit of M6 I was on tonight  Thick fog and you find yourself coming up fast behind someone because they've no rear fogs on. No fog and they have the front ones on blinding you (n)

doing 100 plus in heavy traffic :nono:

Yup its a real irony isnt it! Dunno how many times i've found that. I never drive with front fogs on unless its required or have just came out of fog. But guess it follows the same thread as people who dont have any lights on when its rainning! Rain reduces visibility put your damm lights on! (y)

im in which ever lane has the least stones or big orrible things kickin up stones!! nah generaly il stick left unless over taking which tends to be all the time, so usually in the right lol! altho im a terrible back seat driver telling people to move back across, i hate when the motorways empty n they sit in the fast lane!! theres no need!!

n the white lines are for me gixer! ]

( in stopped motorway traffic of course)

Same here, which is why I rarely use the left lane. It is my car and I'll look after it appropriately, I don't care if someone feels they have to overtake me on the left, its not against the law and it is my responsibility as much as it is theirs to be observant and make sure no one comes into contact.

I only get over taken by BMW's, Mercedes and knobends in Nissan Primera's anyway and they usually going way more then a tonne.

I am a MLOC? if that is the correct terminology and I don't care. Its safer to my paint work and suspension there AND it leaves me the option to go round either to the left or right making it safer for me and others in case of a road emergency.

When the roads are in good nick and other people start driving properly then I will to, its driving on the left which caused me major damage to my 24 day old body kit in the first place.

Challenge me.... I dare you... nah only joking don't challenge me I'm feeling ignornat this morning and won't listen :p

PS: I did vote option 4!

This week I have driven to work (M1, J26 to J23, one of the busiest stretches of motorwa in the UK!) in the first lane at 60mph. I feel much more relaxed and economy is up 20% at a guess. It costs me about 10 minutes a day though. I gave up getting worried about people unable to use lane discipline months ago.

that is the only way to win the rat race. plus in heavy traffic the left lane moves quicker.

yet i still sit in the right lane the whole time, only moving to the centre to undertake BMW's, and moving to the left about 50 yards before i take an exit (sat nav's fault). i'm a prick.

i normally just sit in whatever lane i'm in in a traffic jam on motorway, save stress levels. But the Sei is ace for skipping trough such traffic, oh and the old favourite of shooting up slip lane round roundabout and back down slip road, miss out massive section of stationary traffic :D (I can be a prick to)

One thing to itterate.
The law requires you to use headlights when there is reduced visability. That is when it goes dark and when it rains. The lights are for others to see you, not for you to see. Its been proven that lights used during the day[volvo and saab cars] are seen a lot earlier then with no lights. Dark cars tend to blend in with the background and lights on bikes during the day should be mandatory.

Has anyone seen the amount of cars out and about at night with faulty lights. Either a headlamp out, backlights or the fav at the moment, one headlight, and one opposite spot/fog light on!!! Why do people run with dipped headlights and spot/foglights on?? If you cannot see, get an eye test. Recent figures suggest 1 in 3 people with defective vision!!, and the amount with defective night vision is even higher!!! I always thought the spot/foglights had to be wired to work only with main beam.?

And why do people in fog still drive fast? Are they complete utter idiots. To drive at speed and follow the driver in front is asking for a pile up!! On the M60 recently, with 30 yard visabilty, i was doing around 20mph and cars were passing at 3-4 times that speed!! Yes there was a pileup eventually but luckily got off the motorway before it happened thank god. Shear madness.(n)
