Hey all, well I've decided to get a peugeot on HP, as they do insurance and such in one bundle for a good price, any way I've decided to part exchange my punto but the MOT is due up at the end of the month the same ... well possible day I get my new motor.

So my question is - If my car is due say on the 1st of July to be picked up, will I be pulled up for driving my punto to the dealer (They're in another town 10 miles away).

New driver here so that's why I'm asking :p

Taken off the www.gov.uk website:

Driving a vehicle that’s failed an MOT

You can take your vehicle away if your MOT certificate is still valid.

If your MOT has run out you can take your vehicle to:

have the failed defects fixed
a pre-arranged MOT test appointment
In both cases, your vehicle still needs to meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times or you can be fined.

hi,
if the MOT has expired - then YES ,of course you've got an issue..,
will they even PX it with no valid MOT..??

Charlie

Well I did mention its MOT is coming up and they didn't say otherwise, so I'm guessing so.

Okay, thanks all kinda thought it'd be obvious.

That's a massive downgrade! :p

It may be a massive downgrade, but in the long run it'd be cheaper :p As long as it gets me from A to B, I'm fine :)

It also has breakdown cover, tax, full comp insurance, obviously no MOT for 3 years :)
And if down the line in 3 years time I decide I want another car I could get it :p Or buy this one off :D

Your MOT expires at midnight on the last day of validity.

Read the small print of your sales contract for the new car. If it says that the car you're trading in must have a valid MOT, and it expired the day before, you might have some extra money to pay - probably the cost of an MOT + whatever the dealer would charge to fix any failure items found, or the full part exchange valuation, whichever is the lower.

These all in one deals are ok if you only want to park it on the drive and polish it on a Sunday morning. Try to do more than a very low mileage and the excess charge can certainly mount up

This is how it works.

You go into the dealer and you tell them what mileage you intend to do. This only applies to PCP deals where you have a calculated final payment to make.

I bought my car on a deal like this and set my annual mileage at about 18k a year so far I've done 15k since the first of September last year and have 3 months I which I will make up the other 3k the amount you pay of if you go over isn't that bad and becomes irrelevant if you keep the car at the end anyway.

So no you can do more than park it and polish it

As for trade ins if you can get it to the dealership it's up to them what they will trade in, doesn't have to be taxed MOTd or insured as long as it's yours and you sign it over to them.

If your MOT has expired book it in for an MOT at the dealership on the day you collect your new car and then you can quite legally drive it there, even if you cancel the appointment when you arrive ;)
