MoT time........

Well its time for an MoT on my Stilo MW Dynamic JTD115........ Mileage : 62K

I knew it needed the rear axle bushes from the banging and crashing at the back, and I figured the wear on the outside edge of the OSR tyre was probably due to the axle bushes.........

But I wasn't expecting a broken OSF spring, especially as the "main Stealer" did the spring retainer mod last year replacing only the NSF spring at the same time......... you'll see the irony of this in a moment.........

A set of rear pads is par for the course really.

The weird bit is the price of the replacement parts. The said main stealer wants £57.19 for the front spring, but I've gotta buy a pair, can't buy individually:rolleyes:, £33.48 for rear axle bushes and a whopping £47.94 for rear pads....... all plus the dreaded of course.

Local motor factor can get me an individual spring for £33.80, rear pads for £17.12, both plus the dreaded, but are not able to get the axle bushes.

So our friendly internet parts supplier shop4parts provides two axle bushes delivered for £32.94 inc delivery and VAT.

With a pair of tyres thrown in that'll be about £300 worth of work if I do it myself, which isn't great I suppose (wrong side of payday, and have to run a tight ship these days, doesn't everyone ??) but not too bad either, unless you think otherwise.

Unrelated but had a domestic appliance emergency this week too, so I'm going to be fitting a new door seal to the washer tonight too !!

Guess what I'm going to be doing tomorrow !! Wish me luck !!

Just to add, the axle bushes were delivered today at 09:45 having only been ordered yesterday at about 14:00.

Time to report back on the dreaded axle bush job !! What an arse of a job !!

Luckily I have a "tame mechanic" who's workshop and services I can use, but it took him 2 and half days to do......... We started off trying to remove the old bushes with the axle still on the car, but the bolts were firmly attached to the centers of the bushes. This is probably what caused the bushes to fail, as by design it looks like it is intended for the bushes to rotate on the bolts as they are certainly not going to rotate in the axle !! As we couldn't get any new 140mm x M12 1.25 thread bolts on Saturday it had to wait until Monday......... By Monday night the axle was on the floor, both bolts cut off, both old bushes air-chiselled out and a new one 1/3rd of the way in.

From there attempting to push the bushes in the remainder of the way into the axle took another whole day pretty much !! I can see why others used a vice off the bench, as trying to suspend the entire axle from the ceiling would be the only way to use the hydraulic press.......... even the hydraulic tube bender was considered but would require modification to the guides to fix the axle in place. In the end the bushes were drawn into place using coarse threaded studding with matching nuts and two thick metal plates. Using the air wrench the nuts were wound down until either the studding or the nut stripped it's thread, and was replaced for the process to begin again. A bit "heath-robinson" but it worked in the end !!

The new bolts were liberally coated in "anti-seize" compound and the whole lot reassembled. Job's a good 'un !!

Oh, both rear calipers were seized and the spring clamps were not long enough to compress the spring enough to remove them.......... how long are the front springs !! Maybe drop-springs are in order if only to get them to fit the struts properly !!

Sounds like you had fun, LOL. Mine must need doing soon as if clocked up 110,000 miles now but no real crashing or banging from the rear....yet.
Lowered springs are definately the way to go, if you're into minis like me then you'll appreciate a "firm" ride and not the wallowing of the stilo; lower it; uprate dampers; fit strutbrace = sorted :)

Yeah you could say that !! When we went to our local inde Italian car specialist to ask about the job they hadn't done one yet, and our contact in Advantage Motor Group said "yeah, have fun with that !!" so we kinda knew it would be a pita..........

Firm ride in a mini ?? Yeah you could say that :p Trouble is the Stilo is supposed to be my daily drive, and a diesel estate to boot, so it's never going to be a ballet dancer....... I'd like it do be firmer without going for the full-on Touring car spec........ so progressive springs with a mild drop sound good without completely buggering up the geometry or upsetting the dampers too much.

mot time

hi, just sent my stilo for mot failed on front bushes and a broken front coil. i had the coil spring scafold done about 18 mounths ago by fiat and now im told that the coil is broken. has anyone heard of this happening?? the other thing is the bushes on last years mot it failed with the same thing on one side so i just had that one done and its only lasted 12 mounths. im not to bad with the spanners are these esay things to do?? ive got 2 new front arms and a new coil spring for £120
