Hey guys i found a MOT for £27.42 at halfords the other day booked appointment and i was 110% sure it was gonna fail so i took it as advantage to have a full investigation for £27.42 plus got a free 15 point check plus brakes.

now i am AMAZED! that i passed wooooo! BUT had some advisorys.

Both Rear Tyre walls Perished...........ok thats easily sorted il buy new tyres.

Rear Brake Discs worn...................he said i have new pads on so when they get worn change both at the same time so thats ok.

now here is the big one!

Both Rear Axle Beam Bushses have slight play................hmmmmmmm

so i asked the halfords man for a quote he said someone who had a fiat stilo estate the week before who works for the company had a hard time doing it himself and they both estimated it would cost £350.

fortunatly i have a friend who is a pretty good mechanic who will be happy to fix it for free if i buy the parts.

now i need a hand in finding the parts from what the advisory has said.

i will copy exactly what it says:

001 Nearside rear Axle beam has slight verticle movement between stub axle and axle beam [2.5.A.1a]

002 Offside rear Axle beam has slight verticle movement between stub axle and axle beam [2.5.A.1a]

i have searched for what i believe are the parts but i need the advise from the wonderful FiatForum Family :D

The rear bushes you have linked to fit between the rear axle beam and the chassi. I'm not sure what fits between the stub axle and rear axle beam but I would guess if the stub axle is loose on the rear axle beam the bolts holding the stub axle to the axle beam need tightening up?

Stilo rear stub axle.

if he means the big boy bushes they are suppose to move slightly (they are designed to flex with the semi rigid beam so will move (they are rubber after all)), the way you know that they are shot is if they have oil leaking out and you hear bangs when going over bumbs, also the car will feel a little skitterish as higher speed.
if you have none of them ignore the advisorys - i had one on my old gal for somthing minor - done nowt about it and it wasnt picked up on the next mot.

Im not sure how they could tell if there is movement on the rear axel beam as even when the bushes are shot they dont hardly move them (they weigh probo 20 stonnes and the rest).

Im sure if you went to another mot station they wouldnt even notice - probo be fine until the bushes finally burst.

i agree with roy. Had exactly the same advisory last year, ignored it and a year on at a different mot station not a mention. Leave it as it is until you see oil or the car feels unsteady at speed.

My car failed on it's MOT just last week, and I had 6 days left on original MOT, incidentally, what my car failed on was the first item I checked on the suspension, which were the droplinks for the anti-roll bar.

I had a knocking noise coming from the front offside area (driver's front suspension) and checked the anti-roll bar droplink first (as you do, from experience), and couldn't find a problem, then I checked the following (not in any order) strut, spring (had it replaced earlier this year after a failure) bottom arm, steering arm/rack, wheel hub, top arm and brake calliper and still couldn't find a problem. I then re-checked the droplink convinced it was this that was causing the knocking noise, this time with the car on axle stands, and still couldn't find a problem with it. By this point, I was suspecting the engine mounts, front frame assembly, radiator and so on.

As it turned out, with the car on the ground, the droplink is under a small load when stationary, hence the no movement when checking, and also the same again when the wheel is unloaded (strut extended), the only way this was found was when the MOT tester had it slightly jacked up (wheels still on the deck) and prying the wheel with a long bar.

I have since had the droplink changed, and a new offside rear seatbelt fitted after failing on that too. (dog chewed through it!)
