MOT and Rear Fogs

MOT and Rear Fogs

Obligatory lamps are lamps that are required by law.

There is also no provision in the MOT for issuing a certificate for a car that only drives during the day. Any obligatory lamp that is missing is a reason for failure.

having seen the size of the cluster,i think there is a part you can use.the jap MX5's have different smaller round rear lights?.turn all the lights on and have a look.
chris.the lights appear on the mot check list.so come mot time, they must work.but what you say about daytime with no lights is true.this is a grey area which needs sorting.:)

Sorry NumanR. just asked my neighbour (AA patrolman who was mot tester), and he says the only time a car doesnt need headlights is if it wasnt fitted with them when new, and usually means cars built around the time cars had candle power :)

edit - off the ukmot website...

1.1) Note: Headlamps are not required on vehicles first used before 1 January 1931

British spec cars just have light that's moulded to sit out on the edge of the rear bumper....

No problem Christopher, its easy to get misled by people hearing things third hand etc. I have MOT'd alot of vintage cars and you would be amazed at what they can get away with. Regarding the regulations for MOT, hopefully the mistakes that have been made in the past by testers, (probably perfectly honest mistakes) will be eliminated by the current introduction of MOT computerisation. This should only allow the failure of items by official terms, meaning that if it isnt written as a reason for failure then the tester cannot fail the item. This moves the tester away from worrying about terminology and inspecting the vehicle correctly. Currently the MOT testers only get a refresher course every 5 years, hopefully with computerisation of results, patterns will emerge to highlight problem testers, and stations, to move training to where its required.

A good site is www.vosa.gov.uk
Its the official site from the government.

here is a link Jim, it should help you...

I've been there already and that's why I'm confused cause SVA testing would state the 240mm rule but the MOT guidelines are just is it working....

I'm wondering if the tester is getting construction rules and regs mixed up with MOT rules...

MOT computerisation sucks :( its going to take an hour to test a car then, even if the car is only 4 years old and done 5k miles you still got to leave your card in for an hour or they will think you havent done it right :( but a 4 year old low mile car is not going to need so long to check as sday an old rover 213 :( also the dodgy places will just stick the ega up the exhaust of a diffrent car to pass :(

Ours only takes about 15 minutes, the car moves down what's like a 'production line' going from Co test to brakes to underbody inspection.

The wonders of a goverment run MOT system!

Did you read section 6 chris... Fog lights are mandatory...

jpy: why can't you scavange one of those moulded lights from a scrappy, would look much better than the light you've got currently...

If its a VOSA mot station then you are lucky, most garages dont have the space to do the production line system. Do you do it like the trucks where a tester clips a card to say he has checked that item and then passes it down the line to another tester?

I am not computerised yet so I cant comment.
