Apparently this is illegal....

DSC00008.JPG

The centre of the light is 200mm from the ground and it needs to be 240mm

It's been on the car since 1996 and has passed every year the UK mot and the NI one too...

Has there been a change in the regs?

always been 240 as far as i know.why have you got a fog light there.is it an import.if so,you could utilise the light cluster.

Regardless of the legality, I wouldn't like the light there as it's very close to the (hot) exhaust.

Next time don't buy a grey import... Perhaps you gould put some raising springs on for the MOT by going up 40mm you will pass.

Oi, this is the NON fiat bit of the forum so sod off back to your own bits!:p

The car's from Australia but Mk1 Mx5's don't have a fog light in the cluster. Mazda UK fit one into the back bumper and it looks cheap (I've not priced one but I'm sure its not cheap to buy....)

Bringing a UK supplied car back from Australia with you is hardly a 'gray import' but thanks for the really helpful advice.....

oh ok... why does it have the fog light down there? if it were UK spec surely wouldn't it be built into the light cluster or bumper?

It was bought under one of those armed forces deals where you don't pay vat and what was then called car tax (it was about 15%) cause you where buying in the EU but shipping it to your 'place of work' and not bringing it back for 3 years. It still appears in the V5 that it was tax exempt till 1995.

Anyway, for that reason it's not UK spec. It's Auzzie spec thus no fog light.

And dave... Its a convertable so might be a bit hard to stick a lamp in the rear window, hehe!

think most i have seen are cut into the rear bumper,i think any way.
why not just make a bracket up to bring it up the bumper a bit,can always change it back afterwards. or try another mot station as the next may not bother

The Uk ones have a fog light that follows the curves of the back bumper.

The only thing about making a bracket up is it's going to look really ugly and it's going to leave a hole in the bumper... Or am I being a nob and not getting what you mean?

Jim

Shouldnt have, its a legal requirement under the construction and use act. Report the MOT station who passed it. If a light is a legal requirement then the vehicle cannot pass an MOT without it.
