good point - if you can afford the insurance on a powerful car - The cinq is all the fun i'll be able to afford for a while!

I rekon the cinq is the most fun and economical car for the money at the mo - as long as you have some ability to fix it yourself when it brakes :D

Stop!

A modified car is going to cost more to insure than a faster standard car.

At only 17 years of age, that extra cost, per mod, will probably cost more than the mod itself.

So, in round terms, your £500 budget is going to be £200 for mods, £300 for additional insurance.

Don't ignore a good, full service. The correct grade of clean oil can release more HP than old black treacle in the sump.

The correct tyres, correctly inflated on correctly tracked suspension, might not make more power, but it doesn't waste paower like hard old untracked treadless wonders.

Fresh gearbox oil can release more gee gees to the road.

Properly adjusted brakes on smooth running bearings also release more usable power.

A change of oil, air a fuel filters (assuming SPi, ignore the fuel filter if MPi, its in the tank and not a serviceable item)

Will cost you max £200 in parts and not one penny on your insurance, and the car will be substantially quicker from A to B.

Cheers

Very true - would make tha car more reliable too. Being serviced.

Check what your insurers policy is with mods, i personally pay about £5 per month extra (£60 a year) for +10 bhp (thats just how tesco insurance do it)

At 17 it would cost more - im 23, but i doubt it would be as high as £300.

The insurers know they have you by the balls though as you already have the policy - so check first before buying any goodies.

I've been telling my son this (now 18) for the last year and he refused to accept it so he went and got a quote for his Sei with a fairly long list of mild tune-up parts. His original insurance quote (with 3 accidents and 0 points) was about £2200, with the parts and an extra 6 months on the road it was an embarassing £1700....

The point is that a lot of mods don't upset the insurance companies, it's only when you start going mad that it makes a big difference. As long as you tell them (brutally honest as well) then it isn't an issue, just don't expect it to add any value to the car and if it gets written off in an accident expect to say goodbye to all those modified bits because they aren't covered in value.

This man speaks so much sense:worship:

Insurance companies rape younger people with mods to their cars, a set of alloys can cost more in insurance than buying a more powerful car in the first place .

Or you take the risk and don't declare, have a bump, the insurance is invalid, and you end up with six points on you licence (so probably disqualified) your car crushed and a huge bill for repairs to the other persons car and probably court costs.

Go for an older more powerful car and it will be cheaper in the long run

just wait until your 18, it makes a huge difference, im 17 now, one accident and my insurance for a seicento sporting is £1700 TPFT, when im 18 it goes down to £1050, i asked about adding tinted back windows, whole new sport exhaust, and air filter, it went up to £1100, if i done that now it would go up to £2000, so waiting for a couple of months can save a lot of money (if your 17, im not sure whether you are but thats what my experiance of insurance companies are so far)

"The point is that a lot of mods don't upset the insurance companies," ?????

Man, what sort of insurance company have you been using ?

Are you refering to your 18 years old son? Do tell us the mods that doesn't affect the insurance for an 18 years old :).

When i was 17, i had an 899. Slowly worked my way round the car when i was 21, but it mainly suspensions stuff!

I'd avoid moding the car completely and take rallycinq's advice on this.

CERTAIN insuracne companies dont over charge (but do charge a little more) on cars with a fair few mods (i.e adrian flux) The view is that if you have done loadsa mods and put loadsa money in then you will take car of the car.

Cosmetic mods wont make much of a difference to the premium- when i was 18 i added tinted windows, alloys, sideskirts and a little spoiler and premium went up by £50 for the year...

Ask the insurance company and go for the cheap mods if you must....

The OP is asking for 'more power', not cosmetic mods.

The 'more powwer' mods are the ones that carry the heaviest insurance tarrif.

I was quite suprised when I switch my policy over to my grey sei from the standard blue one.

With all the mods on it they only asked for an extra £100. Policy on my standard one was only £1100.

This time round with the new engine (still not saying what it is yet :D ) and other bits I was quoted the same amount (£1200). But then i'm 21 so....yea.... age in all....

Thanks

Thanks

Most of the time I miss my youth but.... for that sort of money last year that would have covered the insurance on my 5 cars, my life insurance, my mortgage protection and cover for my 13 year old Labrador dog.

In fact the pet insurance for the dog was more than insuring all the cars
