i finally got myself a very big tub of fibre glass, im going to make 2 single sub boxes so i can get the shape and angle of the sloped rear seat and the boot walls, then have 2 subs either side, all i want to know is do i have to use something for the resin to sink into i.e fleece, or cottonwool bedding sheets, or can i simply lay down tin foil and simply wipe it onto that mnaking a mould as i go?

any help is much appreciated

no no no no no.

the resin is very runny and brittle when set. you need to get some fibreglass matting. you lay that down then put the resin on it. the resin then sets around the matting and makes a strong shape.

you want loose woven fibreglass matting, comes on a roll, you generally buy it by the meter.

And you'll end up with something like this...:)

There is a nice neat cover, that hides the amp away...

When i've finished i'll put the rest of the pics up...

This will probably be for sale in a few weeks, as now i've got the hang of fibreglass, there will be no stopping me :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: more fibre glassing questions

yeah i have that link in my favorites, cheers

i get my stuff from a small motor shop round the corner from my house, its dead good as they sell huge tubs of body filler, fibreglass, spray paint, primer, laquer the lot, they even sell the fibre glass matting in rolls and everything is relativley cheap, cost me £8.00 for No. 4 top value kit. which is pretty big,

also..

1) instead of buying cheap brushes to mix and apply it, could i not mix it with some kind of rod, and then appy the fibreglass with the spatular thing that comes with it,

2) is the fibreglass rolls ESSENTIAL? or could i improvise, ya see i was going to mask my boot down and use tinfoil or plastic sheeting and simply get my shape by wiping bits on the base then going round the walls of the boot, ill try and draw a picture to show you what i mean,

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: more fibre glassing questions

I just used some strong cling film type stuff to get the shape of the boot, then used a brush to paint the mix straight on, then put on the fibreglass matting...
