Dunc roll cages are death traps on road cars, if you don't belive me ask the fire brigade, there ok on the track because every body goes the same way but if you go on the road and get in a bad crash it will trap you or worse go through your body.

Obviously a rollcage can only be a good thing....how can it trap you in a crash...isnt that what theyre designed to prevent?

Race cages are designed to make the car safe to exit from it crashed...why would a road cage be designed otherwise?

See http://www.openroadracing.com/html/2vehicle_safety.html, I know its race cages, but the same ideas must apply.

Its probably s**te installation..like not fixing it at all points.
Also..theres usually 6 or so lengths of tube in it.. the main rear hoop, the two left\ right front to back hoops and the rear cross-brace and door bars if fitted.

I can understand doorbars causing a problem if fitted- theyre not designed to resist an impact perpendicular to the bar- that would fail towards the occupants...the main hoop and cross braces are designed to give some resistance in a roll or possibly a rear impact..

I could forsee that a fully welded cage (welded not bolted into the car) would be safer under loading as all the welds would have been designed to be at least as strong as the parent metal.

Thats my opinion and analysis of it anyway (Ive just done a structures coursee at Uni for Mech Eng, but dont claim to know it, just have a basic understanding:);)) So I might well be wrong...

Faded red anyone?

again with no expert knowledge,i would guess it would be if they were using the 'jaws of life' if they had to go through the roll cage as well then it would increase the time you would be trapped in the car.tyes the roll cage stops the roof crushing but it doesnt stop the engine coming through to say hello to your legs[V]

Fair point...hadnt really thought of that...But there is a fair bit of metal between the engine and you, the engine included, and it is definately more than happy to move given the chance...

to be honest, rollcage or not... being in a car in a head on collision isnt a safe place anyway :p

but i would have thought it would be safer if you werte to roll the car as the roof wouldnt cave in. i dont personaly think they are there to prevent damage from other directions except up. Most cars now a days have safety features to absorb the energy from the collision and so a roll cage isnt necessary.

it might look cool and everything and it might make u safer... i dont really know. but unless ur actually gonna race then its not really necessary....

hold on a min... this post did have a point... honest

Apparently a big danger with a roll cage is not wearing a helmet. On the track it is obviously normal and fine to have a helmet, what would you think if you saw a rally driver without one one? However, you can't drive on the road much with a helmet and hence smacking your head hard on the cage and killing yourself is a real risk.

Also, if any of you have 4 or 5 pt harnesses it is a death trap unless you HAVE a roll cage as if you collaspe your roof in you have no way to move downwards laterally and hence have your neck crushed...
