I have a 04 punto mk2b and this morning the power steering randomly cut out when I stopped for traffic lights and the warning light popped up on my dash, so after 5 mins of driving without power steering I pulled in and turned my engine off and back on again...
to which the power steering magically came back again. This has been happening throughout the day and turning my engine off and on again seems to be a temporary fix.

Has anybody got any ideas on the problem / the cost fixing it would likely be

One more thing that MIGHT be related is over the last few days one of my brake lights has been causing the bulb warning light to come on, sometimes it appears to be blown and sometimes it works...problem with my electrics which could be causing the power steering also?

I'm going to take it into the nearest garage when I next can, But I was just wondering what the most common failures are and also how much lighter my wallet is likely to be after it's fixed

Have you read the guide. Taking it to the garage will only result in them telling you a reconditioned steering column is needed at many £££s. You have the mk2b, which doesn't have the relay problem of the mk2, so it probably boils down to something very cheap and very simple. Battery is always worth looking at with deep suspicion.

Battery is absolutely fine, took it into a garage to check battery and alternator.
And they've told me its either the steering collumn and rack or that the plugs have gotten wet as we've had bad rain over the last few days.
