mk2 punto gearbox questions

first of all the little ball has snapped off inside the gear selector cable! its the one on the rear of the box, anyone know what i can do about this?

im replacing the clutch hence the problem, also do the drive shafts pop out? no bolts or clips etc?

Get one from a scrappy.

Don't pop the driveshafts out, undo and remove the bottom strut bolts, split the inner ball joints. This way you don't have to undo the hub bolts, or split the TREs or balljoint. There's just enough woggle room.

You disconnect the shafts at the inner CV joint, rather than pull them completely. Undo one of the boot clips on the inner CV joint and, with the two bottom strut bolts removed, tug on the hub. The CV joint will seperate into its two halves. Use shopping bags to keep the grease in, dirt out.

Yep. I gotcha. But you need a new ball, which is welded onto one of the arms on the selector box. So, scrappy for that. Not sure how you'll remove the ball -- if there's anything left but the ball, get some molegrips on that and carefully lever against it on opposing sides.

Incidentally, for next time, best tool for getting the balls out is either the tool detailed in the Haynes Cinq manual, or you can make something similar out of a cheap, small, cold chisel or modify a small crowbar to suit.

i prefer popping the whole shaft out or leaving them in an lowering the box but the exhaust is in the way.

i hope i can get another ball! how can i get the snapped end out the cable?

I know what you mean, but the amount of potential damage (and expense!) you can incur by doing it that way beggars belief. Not to mention the extra work. Trust me, no-one who works on FIATs for a living does it that way! A quality tie wrap can replace the metal band on the inners without problems.

I'd try drilling a small hole through the opposite side and drifting the ball out through that. Support the open end of the joint on a socket or similar.

i did it your way on the shafts.. does it just slide straight back in??

i tried welding the ball back on, seems to of worked... must be steel??

Yep. slides straight back in. , tie wrap for the band, wipe off any grease that's come out, that's it!

You know that it's in right because everything all fits together.
