Hi people..

This issue is concerning my mums punto Mk2 Year 2000

Basically...When ever my mum pulls away from being stationary it makes a hell of a racket if you have people sitting in the back of the car...it not the exhaust we dont think because we had it check over by someone at kwik fit... but its really irritating... its like a bad virbrating/grinding sound? is this common..can it be fixed?

Please Help !

Thanks

You trust kwik fit ???

Load the car up with people and you stand beside it as it pulls away that will give you an idea of where the noise is coming from. Then investigate as required till you find the cause. (y)

Hi mate,

You trust kwik fit ???

I have to agree there, it normally Kwik fit that cause the back box to knock on the rear beam in the first place, so I wouldn't trust what they say.

Its VERY common on the punto for the rear of the backbox to knock on the rear beam when there is a load in the back. The tolerance between the rear of the back box and the beam is very small. People who are "in the know" are aware of this, and therefore don't just stick the backbox on as far as they can. I good way to test it, is to get 3 of your fattest mates to sit in the back. Then (with the engine off and the exhuast cold) grab hold of the tail pipe (final littl bit of the exhaust) and shake it from side to side and up and down (put some effort into it) and if it is the said problem, you should hear the knocking noise.

Good news is, that if it IS that, its simple to fix. Undo the exhuast clamp underneath rear passenger side, and then with a rubber mallet or similar, wack the back of the backbox a few times towards the rear of the car. Its also worth checking that the box is oreintated corectly. So a bit of a trist may be in order to. Then repeat the test.

Hope that help,
Alan
