General MK2 - Engine started smoking and now not turning over

Hi all,

As the title says. Driving down the A1 and car started losing speed and eventually stopped, managed to pull in to a laybay on time. Engine will not turn over now.

Recovery guy thinks it's timing belt, but I'm thinking HG has gone as it started blowing cold air instead of hot a couple of days ago.

Is it worth scrapping now at this age? It's a 2001 MK2 8v. Bought it for £500 couple of years ago, and spent around £1500 getting exhaust body replaced, new ECU etc. over the time I've had it.

coolant level? but still if it was only hg, car would still crank but not start, i would first remove timing belt cover and if all is good there, then i would measure compression

any lights on dash?

Coolant level dropped too low maybe...overheated engine and possibly seized if it doesnt turn over

Blowing cold air would suggest a coolant issue. Check that first?
