Well here goes, got offered a non running punto by a mate at work - a 2002 1.2 8v mk2 punto 3 door in black and after a bit of haggling down the pub £150 was handed over!
its had a small knock on the drivers wing but otherwise the body is in good nick.

apparently it ran out of oil but i checked today and its fine, he said a piston has gone but i cant see any holes in the block?
the engine isnt seized as the key works and turns the car over a lil bit but the battery is flat.

The car just cut out on him one day and he's just left it standing since january.

i'm looking to use the car as a runnaround for work etc but im on a budget.

i paid £150 for the car wich i thought was a bargain.

I'll pop some pics up later if i get chance.

so basically im asking you guys to keep an eye on this thread and throw me some advice and tips if you can as im new to fiats! lol

also the engine has a cam sensor on the top? can i replace the engine with a non sensor engine?

rob

you can, but you'd need to install the sensor on to the new engine. Simply a case of using your old cam cover, timing belt cover and camshaft pulley.

ah, well thats good to know! (y) would a mk1 engine fit then?

yes i believe its a "mia" it has manual windows and black plastic bumpers but i may tart it up a bit with some body coloured bumpers and fiat alloys.

i just need to get the car home and get cracking on it!

'Fraid not, the MK1 is mounted differently and uses a different intake. You can use any 1.2 8v from MK2 or MK2b (facelifted) puntos, late 1999 to early 2006. You'll find the engines from 02 onwards have the camshaft sensor already, but as mentioned, it can be fitted to older ones aswell. Early models are un-named, but with the later ones, the cars fitted with the 1.2 8v are called 'Active'. I believe Grande punto engines (late 06 to present) are also a direct physical fit, but not 100% certain.

Looks like an easy project, and a bargin! nice one!

ok well after a lovely bit of rain and grime i have the punto sat on our driveway!

much to my amazement we managed to get it to start with a new battery, it runs but knocks and smokes like a goodun!

The new wing arrived in the post this morning so as soon as we get some decent weather i'll chuck that on and make a start on the engine, i'm unsure as to the cost of new big end shells but if its gonna need a new engine i may aswell start pulling it apart and flogging bits off the old engine eh! (y)

will post more pics soon.

well i've had it home for a couple of days now and i've managed to get the new wing sorted, spent this afternoon pulling the engine apart and found a few suprises.
