Technical mk1 punto front subframe

hey there guys, someoen might know, is it possible to split a subframe in half, remove the captive nuts for the gearbox mount and then weld new one's in, after that then weld it back up??

It is possible with the right tools but you would lose the integrety (strength) of the frame. you might need to put in a new solid sub frame rather than weld it back up...

Sorry about the spelling & this is just a point of view, others may disagree as im not a profesional with this type of job

Just drop the whole subframe and do the repair. That's what had to happen when I had a damaged gearbox mount bolt.

Does anyone know how rusty the subframe can get before you need to replace it?

mines about 20% rust cover - at max 1.5mm deep of rust at one end

They are made of a very high density pressed steel, they should not be rusting that badly.
