General MK1 Punto Engine Problem

Hi, my mk1 punto has developed a really annoying fault;

When you go to start it, it will eather; start fine or other times it will start then stop streight away, or start on 2 or 3 cylinders, and eather pull up to 4 or just stop, it doesn't matter if you put your foot down when it is doing this, the throttle has little or no effect on it.
Also when it actually starts fine (about 5 out of 10 times) it will keep going fine, the only problem i have noticed when it is running, is when you put your foot to the floor to get out of a junction it hesitates, then picks up after a few seconds.

I have been to a few back street garages and a fiat garage and none of them have a clue what it is (although when you go to show them it starts fine!)

Points to note:
- it has had a brand new crank sensor and it did this even before it was replaced
- it has had 4 new spark plugs
- the air filter is clean and has been replaced
- it has had 2 new (second hand) coil packs & 4 new (second hand) HT Leads
- the throttle cable pulls the inlet all the way open
- there are no immobilisor faults or fault lights on the dashboard.
- Before anyone says "it is dropping in bits" it has done 35000 miles

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's not agood idea replacing ignition leads with s/h ones! But I doubt that's the issue.

Bad starting and general rough running can be an early sign of a HG issue. Compression test will rule in or out.

Get a Wet and Dry Compression test
And let us know the results
