Just replaced the bearings in the trailing arm pivot, Ye Gods what a mess the original parts were in rust, collapsed taper roller bearings but the bolt came out easy.
What I don't understand is the Bearing kit cost £28 + Vat & an exchange traling arm is £40 + Problem with a replacement arm is that you have to replace the rear hub as well. The bearing is usually destroyed when you remove it as it is part of the hub. This being the case why don't the suppliers include a new hub with the arm?
The sealing design for the assembly is crap not a wonder they dont last & are taper rollers the best for an oscillating pivot?
The Rear susupension fulcrum bearing in Jaguars from 1966 -1986 are very similar & also fail due to poor sealing I notice that on american hot rodding sites (Jag IRS is very popular with Hot Rodders) they replace the bearings with high spec plastic bushes which tolerate the muck thrown at them from the road much better & I wonder if The Punto Trailing arms would last longer with a similar set up.
Got to be worth investigating I used Nylatron bushes in my Lancia Beta VX front wishbones & never had to replace them.
mmmmm food for thought.
