Time to renew anti virus/firewall package.. anyone have any thoughts about McAfee vs. Norton? Or anything else out there worth considering?

None of the above :)

Norton is a resource hog, and I hate McAfee as well. What system are you running?

Personally, I run NOD32 antivirus, Outpost as software firewall, and router as my hardware firewall.

Oh, and a few spyware tools I run now and again.

At the mo I run AdAware, Spybot, McAfee SecurityCenter (anti virus/firewall), Stinger (outdate) and Windows Defender at least once a week and have never had a problem.

The only concern I have with the free AVG is because its free it might not be as effective as others?

I'm kind of interested in the Norton 360 - anyone using it?

I once had to resurect a friends PC who had become infected.

Tried to install Norton.. nope.. the virus wouldn't allow it.

Tried some other well known brand.. Nope.. failed again

In desperation found this free anti-virus on the net.. and hey presto.. it worked. Can't remember its name but they released updates for free and it always worked. Eventually they became a pay for service but for all their loyal 'customers' who had the free system - they kept releasing free updates :D Eventually I went to uni and lost internet.. lost my codes and forgot the service. It may well have evolved into the AVG available today.

Im finding Avast! good at the moment... seems less intrusive than AVG (which is also very good and i used that for quite a bit too...).

In other words free doesn't necessarily mean its crap I guess. Well I'll probably check out the Norton 360 at the shops, but if nothing excites me then I'll probably just renew my McAfee subscription.. as they say 'if it ain't broken don't fix it' ;)

im using norton 07, spybot, adaware, defender, and windows firewall. not had a virus yet. scanned weekly.

I use AVG7.5 free download. It tells you how to fix a problem when it occurs, does daily upgrades and scandisk once a day when the pc is on.

generally norton and mcafee are the ones to steer clear of.

i agree... found norton (was free on my pc when i bought it) slowed my system down + when i installed AVG after having norton, AVG found a virus that norton had missed!

norton is intrustive, resource hungry and over priced.

AVG is good for a free one, but if you are going to pay - then use NOD32. It is the best out there.

I'm running Norton 360, and I have to say its not as bloaty or intrusive as the Norton of old infact its very good and it phishing dector is working very well as it detected a fake EBay and Paypal page I opened in a email link.

Here is a handy hint,,,

If you buy the download package, get it from the US site here,
http://shop.symantecstore.com/store...meID.518300/pgm.8187400/pbPage.N360PDpopup_v2
Why? well its $69.99 which is about £35 at the current exchange rate.
And if you get the same product from the UK site,,
http://www.symantecstore.com/dr/sat...6&CUR=826&DSP=&PGRP=0&ABCODE=&CACHE_ID=262457
Its £59.99.
I know it works because my credit card only got billed for £42.99 as I added the unlimited downloads should Vista crash in 6 months time. Thats still a decent saving.

It is good and you hardly notice it.

Ok I'm going to give AVG anti virus, anti spyware and anti rootkit a try.

Can anyone recommend a good firewall?
